Way too much modern Catholic moral argumentation boils down to nothing more than:
1. Human dignity, therefore
2. [Plug in desired conclusion]
It's lazy and intellectually unserious and utterly unconvincing to anyone who doesn't already agree with whatever conclusion one is trying to establish. It opens the door to all kinds of mischief, because the notion of "human dignity" is so vague and contested that it can be, and is, deployed to arrive at all sorts of conclusions, including conclusions that contradict one another. And for that reason, bare appeals to human dignity are inevitably question-begging, because what human dignity amounts to and what it entails are precisely what is in dispute between the different sides of the various issues to which the notion is applied (capital punishment, immigration, sexuality, or whatever).
This is one of the many high costs of having taken Catholic theology off of the Scholastic gold standard. Too many minds have turned to mush and simply don't know how to reason logically. They just repeat gauzy stock phrases and stomp their feet.
Again and again, this disastrous administration brings discredit even to the otherwise defensible policies it tries to implement. The death penalty should be kept on the books for cases where it is necessary to protect society, as even Pope St. John Paul II acknowledged. It should never be turned into a ghoulish spectacle or public entertainment. When executions were carried out in the Papal States, it was not done in a spirit of revenge or gloating. The emphasis was instead on solemnly doing everything necessary to facilitate the salvation of the condemned man’s soul, by urging him to accept his punishment in a spirit of repentance, offering the sacraments, and calling on the public to pray for him. That was a Christian attitude toward the matter. Livestreaming a man’s death is reminiscent instead of pagan Rome and its libido dominandi. There is something deeply wrong with these people. By the disgrace they bring upon the Christian morality they claim to represent, they succeed only in giving aid and comfort to its enemies.
In a wide-ranging interview on EWTN’s “The World Over with Raymond Arroyo,” Bishop Robert Barron pushed back against the idea that the Catholic Church’s commitment to interreligious dialogue replaces its primary mission to preach the Gospel.

NEW: Cardinal Müller has warned that -- “the Christian West is no longer merely threatened by external forces, but is being eroded by an internal apostasy”
On Islam, he adds: “Muslims do not respect a weak Christianity that is ashamed of the Cross & reduces itself to a charity organization or an environmental watchdog. They respect those who believe”

Word has just come down that St. Paul’s Cathedral in London—the second most important church in the Anglican world—has imitated Canterbury Cathedral in permitting “raves,” nightclub-like entertainments, to take place in its confines.
The usual reasons for acquiescing to this have been trotted out: reaching out to the young, trying to get with the times, etc. But this development simply shows that the leadership of the Church of England has lost any sense of the crucial distinction between the sacred and the secular.
Across the centuries and across the cultures, our ancestors seem to have intuitively grasped the importance of this demarcation. Whereas the secular is the arena of ordinary experience and activity, the sacred is another realm, a different dimension.
Accordingly, in the properly sacred space, one is lifted out of the conventional and introduced into the numinous. This is why Christian cathedrals are filled with images of the saints and angels and why their interiors are meant first to disorient us and then to reorient us toward the divine.
It is also why, in the initiation rituals of primal peoples, a young person is purposely ripped out of the ordinary and introduced into the mythic and mystic dimension. And it is why, throughout the Bible, sacred spaces are carefully set apart from common spaces.
The contemporary West is, quite literally, the first culture in human history that is in danger of collapsing the sacred into the secular, or better, losing any sense of the difference between the two.
This is doing enormous damage, especially to young people, whose lives have been flattened into a preoccupation with money, worldly success, and material things.
The Church indeed should go out into the secular space to find those who have wandered away from God, but it should then lead those wanderers back to the holy.
Having “raves” in the nave of one of the most sacred spaces in the Christian world is, I’m sad to say, another sign of our pitiful surrender to ideological secularism.
The Diocese of Fort Worth in Texas, under Bishop Michael Olson, has opened a new parish named after Matthew Ayariga, one of the 21 young men murdered by the Islamic State on a Libyan beach in February 2015.
A native of Ghana, Ayariga was reportedly not a Christian when he was captured alongside 20 Egyptian Christians.
According to some accounts, the courageous witness of his fellow captives inspired him during their captivity.
When the terrorists reportedly demanded that he reject Jesus Christ, Ayariga is said to have responded, “Their God is my God.”
Quemadmodum desiderat cervus ad fontes aquarum, ita desiderat anima mea ad te, Deus.
Just as the deer pines for springs of water, so does my soul pine for you, God.
