If students came in with the understanding that they need to give their undivided attention to their studies while they’re in the building, they’d be more successful.

Interesting to me that the “public school is garbage” argument often boils down to “my kid has *SO* much homework.” I do not assign homework, but I also find that many students aren’t focused enough to retain the information we worked through.

FYI: there is no epidemic of “radical leftist” teachers. There *is* an epidemic of children with unfettered internet access. TikTok/YouTube/Discord— hotbeds of indoctrination. Actual teachers are just trying to get students to remember their math facts & grammar rules.

No. If what is happening is in fact a power struggle, you’ve already lost. Good classroom management eliminates the need for them. This is not “cowardly,” it’s enforcing rules and boundaries without arguing with a child.

So, you’ll hear from teacher trainers, ed professors, admin,, etc to NEVER initiate a power struggle with a student during class I used to agree. I don’t think I do anymore Sometimes, you have too if the kid is misbehaving Only thing is if you do so, you HAVE TO WIN

Spent 13 years as an ELA teacher. Interested to see how my classroom management and time structure translates to math.

Problem of the Week: If Student A starts the year with 12 pencils, 4 pens, 3 highlighters, 2 sharpies, a pencil sharpener, and a block eraser, how many class periods will it take for all those items to disappear?

@VinceBoley I try to be concrete & time limited. “Take 10 sec to find text clues for why he made that choice.” *10 sec l8r* “Turn to your partner. The person who’s closer to the door has 30 sec to share their findings. Go.” Then I circulate w/ a clipboard & make notes.

Also true for ELA. Exemplars and I do/We do/You do makes a world of difference.

Good things happen when every math practice problem is accompanied by a pre-worked example: 1.) 𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘤𝘬. Students get stuck when they’ve been given no examples to refer to, can’t remember the examples the teacher went over in class, or

Why is it that students always seem surprised that they have to present the presentation they’ve been working on?

If you want results, be sure to offer partnership; trust us to do our jobs; and message to your child that the work *is* important, will require sustained, repetitive effort, and constitutes an attainable goal/expectation.

- not care enough to revise their work, - not buy in enough to retain information, - not have any motivation to do so because parents will attempt to bully the teacher into inflating grades.

When people talk about teachers’ having a nefarious agenda for what kids “should believe,” do these people understand that: (a) teachers actually want kids to be competent in their subject; (b) kids come to class with ideas they’ve learned at home, from friends, or the internet;

Whenever I hear folks talking about “the kids these days,” I wonder how many of them take the time to teach kids, directly, what is expected of them before criticizing children for not magically knowing “how to behave properly” in a given setting.

To take this a bit further, love is a lesson plan informed by true knowledge of where your students are. To map the best route, you need to know your starting point and your destination.

Love is a lesson plan. Everyday that bell rings, be ready to teach. That's love and respect. Prepare like you're teaching a king or queen's child... because you are.

Restorative practices do **not** mean lack of consequences or boundaries. They **do** mean that, in conjunction with an appropriate consequence, there is a concerted effort to **restore** the student to the classroom.
