Four Black teenagers took the subway to Brooklyn to look at a used car that was for sale. Thirty white youths were waiting on the corner with baseball bats. They were expecting someone else entirely. Yusuf Hawkins was 16. August 1989. The mob had gathered because of a rumor about a local girl. Yusuf Hawkins and his friends had nothing to do with any of it. They were carrying a newspaper advertisement with an address on it. He was shot twice in the chest. The shooter got 32 years to life. The man who assembled the mob was acquitted of murder. And the detail that shows you the whole country in one frame: when his family marched through that neighborhood afterward, residents lined the street holding up watermelons and shouting at them. Nineteen eighty-nine. A 16-year-old went to look at a used car.
