Look around you. The chair beneath you feels solid. The screen in your hand feels solid. Your own body feels like a collection of solid material. But go deep enough into matter, and the picture becomes far stranger.
Atoms are not tiny solid balls packed together like miniature bricks. Most of an atom is empty space, while its particles are described by quantum physics in terms of fields, waves, and probabilities. At the deepest level we can currently describe, nature does not behave like a collection of perfectly fixed objects. Instead, it behaves more like a constantly changing system of interactions.
That is where the mystery begins.
An electron, for example, cannot simply be pictured as a tiny object following a precise path around the nucleus. Quantum mechanics describes where it is likely to be found. What we call a “particle” can also display wave-like behavior, depending on how it is observed and measured.
Even the emptiness inside an atom is not simply nothing. Quantum fields exist throughout space, and what we call particles can be understood as excitations of those fields. The solid objects we experience every day emerge from countless interactions between these fundamental ingredients.
So the table in front of you is not solid in the way it appears. Its apparent solidity comes from the behavior of atoms, electrons, and electromagnetic forces preventing the atoms in your hand from simply passing through it.
And this leads to an unsettling question: if the world beneath our senses is governed by probabilities, fields, and interactions rather than tiny pieces of solid matter, what exactly does it mean for something to be “real”?
Quantum physics does not prove that we are merely “energy vibrations,” nor does it show that human consciousness creates reality. But it does reveal something much stranger: the deeper we look into nature, the less the universe resembles the solid, mechanical world our senses suggest.
Reality may be far more mysterious than it appears.

🚨 We Once Thought the Milky Way Was the Entire Universe 🤯
It is strange to think that just over 100 years ago, astronomers were still trying to answer a basic question: was the Milky Way everything there was?
In 1920, astronomers Harlow Shapley and Heber Curtis famously argued over this question. Shapley believed the Milky Way was enormous and that the strange spiral nebulae seen through telescopes were part of it. Curtis had a very different idea. He thought some of those spirals might actually be completely separate galaxies, sitting far beyond the Milky Way.
At the time, nobody had a clear answer. Even the size of the Milky Way was uncertain.
Then came Andromeda.
In 1923 and 1924, Edwin Hubble found Cepheid variable stars in Andromeda. These stars change brightness in a predictable way, which allowed astronomers to use them as distance markers. Hubble’s first estimate put Andromeda at roughly 900,000 light-years away.
The number was enough to change the argument.
Andromeda was far too distant to comfortably fit inside the Milky Way as it was then understood. It was becoming clear that the Milky Way was not the whole universe. It was one galaxy among many.
Today, we know Andromeda is actually about 2.5 million light-years away.
But that was only the beginning.
We now estimate that the observable universe is about 93 billion light-years across. That can sound impossible when the universe itself is about 13.8 billion years old. How could we see something that is now more than 13.8 billion light-years away?
Because the universe has been expanding.
The light from extremely distant objects started traveling toward us billions of years ago, while the space between galaxies continued to expand. By the time that ancient light reaches us, the objects that produced it can be much farther away than their original distance would suggest.
And there is something even more unsettling about that number.
93 billion light-years is not necessarily the size of the universe.
It is only the part we can observe.
Beyond our cosmic horizon, there may be enormous regions that we will never be able to see because their light has not had enough time to reach us. The entire universe could be vastly larger than the part we can observe — and we still don’t know whether it has an edge at all.
A little more than a century ago, we were debating whether the Milky Way was the entire universe.
Today, we know it is just one galaxy in a cosmos filled with other galaxies, stretching far beyond what the human mind can easily picture.
And perhaps the strangest part is:
The universe was always this vast. We just didn’t know it.

QUANTUM SENSORS NAVIGATED.
September 4th, a Defense Innovation Unit test with Honeywell. An Embraer 170 flew 4 hours and 23 minutes from Puget Sound to Alaska, over open ocean, without GPS. The aircraft navigated by reading Earth's magnetic field.
The result was an 89% better position accuracy than the backup navigation systems it flew against. The data ran on stock tablets, not a rack of classified hardware but consumer devices.
Earth's crust has a magnetic fingerprint, unique at every location, mapped decades ago. A magnetometer sensitive enough can read that fingerprint and match it to the map, position without any signal at all. Nothing to jam, nothing to spoof, because you're not receiving anything. The sensitivity required is what quantum sensing delivers.
Over water is MagNav's hardest test, the crustal signal is weaker and the maps are thinner. Passing there, for four-plus hours, is the difference between a lab demo and an operational capability.
Chain this to the money, the Pentagon launched Project Farseer in June. $200M to move quantum sensing into the force, clocks, gravimeters, magnetometers, with prototypes demanded in months, not years. Three months later, a quantum-sensed aircraft crossed the Pacific corridor without GPS. The program and the proof are arriving together.
GPS jamming is now routine over the Baltic, the Middle East, and Ukraine. Every plane, ship, and missile depends on a signal weaker than a lightbulb that adversaries switch off daily.
