S. Secret Service men at the home of A. F. Gallum, millionaire head of a large canning factory here today. The wireless plant was equipped for sending messages long distances. The stock farm of Wm. Pabst of Milwaukee, the multi-millionaire brewer, was searched for wireless instruments which the agents of the government were informed existed there, but the secret service men failed to find any evidence at the Pabst farm. When the government officials searched the Gallum home in a fashionable German colony in Waupeka[sic] county, the mechanism of the wireless was found on a table in a room on the upper floor. The wires from the instrument trailed through a window and connected with an aerial arrangement suspended at a considerable height. The plant was ready for instant use." From the Beloit Daily News, September 20th 1917 "Discover Wireless Plant at Waukesha (Special by United Press.) Waukesha, Wis., Sept. 20.—Complete silence prevailed today on a report that federal authorities had uncovered a wireless outfit of wide sending range at a fashionable colony in Waukesha. The plant, it was said, was ready for instant use. It was said to be the property of a prominent Milwaukeean. Authorities, were resisted in their raid on the place, it was reported." From the Birmingham [Alabama) News, Sep 20th 1917 "Hidden Wireless Plant is Found Equipment Uncovered in Summer Home of Milwaukee Tanning Firm's Head. By International News Service. Waukesha, Wis., Sept. 20.—Fully equipped and ready for instant use, a powerful wireless telegraph outfit seized in a raid on the home of A. F. Callum, head of a Milwaukee tanning firm, is in the hands of United States Secret Service men today. The wireless equipment was found in Callum's Summer home at Pine Lake. Search of the home of F. Pabst, wealthy Milwaukee brewer, also was made, It is reported, but no wireless was found. At the Callum home the mechanism of the plant was found on a table in a room on the upper floor. Wires running through a window connected with an aerial arrangement suspended at considerable height. The efforts of the Secret Service men to remove the equipment were resisted, it is alleged." From the Kansas City Post, September 20th 1917 "Wireless Plant is Seized in Rich Wisconsin Tanner's Home Efforts of Secret Service Men to Remove Apparatus Resisted; Report Visit, Also, to F. Pabst's Residence. Waukesha, Wis., Sept. 20.—A fully equipped and powerful wireless telegraph outfit seized in a raid on the home of A. F. Source: newspapers .com via Waukesha Public Library Note—raids similar to the one described above were a result of an executive order following the US' entry to WWI: "Executive Order 2585—Taking Over Necessary and Closing Unnecessary Radio Stations April 06, 1917 Whereas, the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled, have declared that a state of war exists between the United States and the Imperial German Government; and Whereas it is necessary to operate certain radio stations for radio communication by the Government and to close other radio stations not so operated, to insure the proper conduct of the war against the Imperial German Government and the successful termination thereof Now, therefore, it is ordered by virtue of authority vested in me by the Act to Regulate Radio Communication, approved August 13, 1912, that such radio stations within the jurisdiction of the United States as are required for naval communications shall be taken over by the Government of the United States and used and controlled by it, to the exclusion of any other control or use; and furthermore that all radio stations not necessary to the Government of the United States for naval communications, may be closed for radio communication. The enforcement of this order is hereby delegated to the Secretary of the Navy, who is authorized and directed to take such action in the premises as to him may appear necessary.
