When people put CC license on their work, allowing derivs without permission, is AI use one of the ones they allow? When I say CC-BY on my YT videos, does that mean someone can use them all to train an AI/bot to behave/sound like me? Cc @EnglishOER @xolotl @steelwagstaff
@Bali_Maha @EnglishOER @xolotl @steelwagstaff We need a CC-NO-AI license.

@Linkletter @Bali_Maha @EnglishOER @steelwagstaff Hi Ian! Not sure if you saw my responses to Maha: x.com/xolotl/status/…
@xolotl @Linkletter @EnglishOER @steelwagstaff So I agree that copyright hasn't promoted social justice and there are bigger issues in AI. And yes, seems AI hasn't respected copyright or attribution in any way. However, my concern is that ppl may fear their work being appropriated by AI and limit what they share. 1/2
@xolotl @Linkletter @EnglishOER @steelwagstaff 2/2 I think others have said this before, and I didn't mind for some reason when I was imagining text being used this way, but when I imagined video being used this way, I felt differently.
@Bali_Maha @Linkletter @EnglishOER @steelwagstaff I've found myself separating my concerns and the goals I'd like to see realized from specific proposed solutions. As some folks on this thread can well attest, the legal system doesn't always do the right thing. I'm not ready to put faith in copyright law here.
@xolotl @Bali_Maha @EnglishOER @steelwagstaff I have more faith in clear language than the legal system. The "or I might sue you" part of a Creative Commons license is not as important to me as the permission.
@Linkletter @Bali_Maha @EnglishOER @steelwagstaff I guess I’m hoping for something that would convey intention AND actually work. #dreamer
@xolotl @Bali_Maha @EnglishOER @steelwagstaff Who is to say it wouldn't? The question of whether training AI constitutes fair use won't be answered until lawsuits work their way through the system. Clear language about whether the copyright holders themselves permit such use would be useful to the judges who will decide.
@Linkletter @xolotl @Bali_Maha @EnglishOER AFAIK, 'fair use' doctrine (and the doctrine of first-sale, for that matter) means that fair uses can be exercised independently of the copyright holder's desires. This is why stating that you don't grant permission to resell your book, for example, would be legally unenforceable
@steelwagstaff @xolotl @Bali_Maha @EnglishOER I think of it kind of like a “no trespassing” sign. I’ll stop speaking to the legal aspect (more than enough on my plate right now) and just emphasize that clear permissions are a good thing.
@Linkletter @xolotl @Bali_Maha @EnglishOER Totally agree. People who create things & share their creations should be encouraged to express their desires for how their creations are or are not used. Those of us who want to be in a healthy community with other creators should take care to listen to & respect those wishes.
