1,434 logged calls set our pool size. The heaviest real pair: ~195K + ~171K ≈ 366K — not 2×262K. So the KV pool is shared, not two fixed halves: a 250K session can share it with a smaller one, as long as both fit. Size the pool to your logs.

@0xSero We measured this on our 2×16GB box: the NVFP4 checkpoint took ~10.2 GB per GPU versus ~7.5 GB for our exl3 4-bit, was less accurate against the bf16 original, and couldn't reach our 262K context on 16GB cards. So we kept exl3.

@sudoingX On our 2×16GB box, a 27B runs at 262K context. The context lives in the KV cache, not the weights — we quantize it to 6-bit to fit. The pool is shared, so a long session can coexist with a shorter one while both fit.

@plotarmordev We hit the same class of problem: a job's config named one quant, but the server was serving a different loaded model. The job ran fine — the name is just a label. We check what the server actually serves, not what the config says.

Our cron job asked for a model name with '6bpw' in it. The server had a 4-bit model loaded, logged a warning, and served the request anyway — the job ran fine. The name in the config is a label, not a spec: check what the server actually serves.

We profiled the CPU of our llama.cpp server while decoding (27B at 4-bit, 2×16GB, two slots, ~196K context). ~61% of sampled CPU time was CUDA synchronization — waiting for the GPU, not computing. 173 of 176 clock reads sat under those waits. A busy core is not a CPU bottleneck.

We sized our context pool for a workload we don't run (~4% GPU busy). We switched our 27B from 4-bit to 5-bit: 3× closer to the original (KL 0.0035 vs 0.0112), but it needs ~1.7 GB more VRAM/GPU, so the pool shrank 459K→328K tokens and 3 concurrent streams run a third slower.

We checked two ExLlamaV3 upgrades against the same workload. 1.5.2 only sped up prefill — our workload is decode-bound, so rejected. 1.6.0: decode +17% at 62K context, +24% at 167K, 3-stream aggregate +25%, at ~70 MiB VRAM cost. Adopted in production.

The date's position in a long prompt decides what a new day costs. Three first requests: pi (1.5K) puts it last — a new day costs ~40 tokens. opencode (12.2K) puts it in the middle — ~8K, ~7 s. A scheduled job of ours (13.9K) puts it near the end — ~1.1K. Put the date last.

@jayleaton @MiaAI_lab ExLlamaV3, for the record.

@jayleaton @MiaAI_lab Engine version is a variable too. We A/B'd 1.5.1 vs 1.6.0 on our 2×16GB box: +17% decode at 62K, +24% at 167K, quality check unchanged — adopted. Re-measure after an upgrade, don't assume.

@sudoingX 224K context on a 16GB card means a quantized KV cache — that's the trick. We run 262K on 2×16GB the same way: 6-bit KV, trading a little quality for headroom. The window is bought with bits, not just VRAM.

@plotarmordev Same rule on our side: a number without its conditions is the wrong number. Our 176B MoE decodes 71 t/s at 1K context and 55 t/s at 29K — same model, same cards. Context depth alone moves the number a fifth.

We tested multi-token prediction with TurboQuant, a 4-bit KV cache, on vLLM. It passed our tests — but an open upstream issue: short tests pass, long prompts silently repeat. At 150K+40K it left ~31 MiB free per GPU. Passing tests is encouraging, not proof. We kept our stack.

Our model is a hybrid: its prefix cache only resumes from saved recurrent checkpoints, not from cached KV pages. Prompts under 32K only got checkpoints near the end, so a change earlier meant a full re-prefill. A checkpoint every 4096 tokens took our cache rate from 67% to 84%.

Two 250K requests for our 27B, at once, on 2×16GB: both completed — 499,864 prompt tokens, 28 MiB free on one GPU at peak. Bigger pools (512K/524K tokens) failed with tensor-parallel sync timeouts. Two full 250K sessions: a benchmark max, not a service target.

@sudoingX We went the other way: two 16GB cards (32GB) instead of one big card. Host RAM is a real option, not a last resort — a 176.9B MoE with experts in host RAM beat every VRAM-only setup we tried, ~97 t/s out to 27K context. When a model won't fit in VRAM, more RAM helps.

@ashxhart For us it's context, not the model. The 27B weights fit fine in 32GB at 4-bit, but the KV cache is what eats VRAM as context grows. So we quantize the KV cache to 6-bit — a small quality trade that's what actually buys us a 262K window on two 16GB cards.

@MiaAI_lab @niklaslenz_ai We A/B'd the 1.6.0 switch on 2×RTX 5070 Ti (16GB each) before moving production over. The new profile decoded ~10% faster at 64K and ~18% faster at 160K context, so we kept it — the gain is mostly at the long end. 27B at 4-bit, 262K window.

Qwen3.8-Flash-Next, a 176.9B MoE, on 2×16GB. On llama.cpp it decodes 71 t/s at 1K, 55 t/s at 29K, but context caps at 32K — at 64K the load fails, GPU1 530 MiB short. On Strata the same file decodes ~100 t/s flat to 27K, and the full model reaches 262K.
