🧵: The “false allegations of rape” storyline is one of society’s most successful conspiracy theories and one of our most pervasive moral panics. Of course, it happens. All humans are capable of lying. But the number of false allegations is NOT statistically significant. 1/4
The false allegation narrative cannot, numerically, be considered a trend in the way it is currently being portrayed. The ONS puts the figure for false allegations of rape at 0.5%. That means men as *as likely to be falsely accused of rape than they are to die of the common flu.*
@LuciaOC_ Umm what fantasy database are you pulling from. The US military did a study on proven false claims and came up with 16%. That's pretty significant--don't you think?
@LuciaOC_ @HannahMcNeish Board certified in adult & consultation liaison psychiatry here w UCLA C/L & Trauma Psychiatry fellowship (& year subspecialty long training in UCLA human sexuality program). Decades of service to hundreds of patients referred s/p reported sexual assault. Zero false allegations.
@LuciaOC_ Only if you're comparing massive surveys of people asking if they've been raped to admitted false accusers.
@LuciaOC_ The 'false' should be compared to the "jailed", as they've same standards. Remember Crystal Gail Magnum? As she was never charged with filing a false accusation, she would not be counted in the bottom right, but the men she falsely charged ARE counted in the mass of 'rapists'
@LuciaOC_ This is not evidence of Brand's guilt in case anyone is wondering.
