Allium paradoxum, few-flowered garlic, is an invasive species from the Caucasus; I had recorded a few plants near this site in Oxford before, but now I think I've found the mother lode! It's not easy to spot when it's not "flowering", so now's definitely the time to look for it.
New to the Pictorial Guide: spotted spurge, Euphorbia maculata, a prostrate annual alien particularly found in plant nurseries. makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
Rare Plant Register for VC33 is ± ready to go online! (252 pp; inc. maps, etc.) I am also considering a limited print run to sell on at cost price. Could anyone interested in buying a copy please let me know so that I can estimate numbers. More takers = lower price! @BSBIbotany
New to the Pictorial Guide: Ambrosia artemisiifolia (common ragweed), a very odd ruderal North American member of the Asteraceae, with separate (tiny) male and female capitula makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
New to the Pictorial Guide: golden dock, Rumex maritimus, which is not especially maritime, but is rather golden makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
New to the Pictorial Guide: floating pennywort, Hydrocotyle ranunculoides, an invasive aquatic plant from North America that is only too well naturalised on a number of our waterways makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
New to the Pictorial Guide: shrubby osier (Salix × fruticosa), a rare hybrid between two common species: eared willow (S. aurita) and osier (S. viminalis) makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
New to the Pictorial Guide, an overlooked rose: Rosa squarrosa (R. canina 'Dumales'; "glandular dog-rose"), a widespread species that has not always been separated from R. canina s.l. makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
New to the Pictorial Guide: cowbane, Cicuta virosa, a tall umbellifer of water margins, especially in the northern half of Ireland, the Cheshire–Shropshire plain and the Norfolk Broads makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
New to the Pictorial Guide: fine-leaved water-dropwort (Oenanthe aquatica), a perennial herb of water margins, especially around cattle makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
New to the Pictorial Guide: brown bent, Agrostis vinealis (Poaceae), a common and widespread grass of heaths makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
Struggling to ID this orchid found at Minera Quarry (VC50) last weekend. I thought it was a hybrid with the abundant Gymnadenia conopsea (s.l.) there, but can't find a good fit. Any suggestions?
New to the Pictorial Guide: water bent, Polypogon viridis, an invasive pavement grass that is already abundant in SE England, and is spreading across the country. makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
A nice in-situ comparison of the two maritime spurges: the taller Euphorbia paralias (upper right) and the shorter, redder E. portlandica (lower left). Murlough NNR, Co. Down.
New to the Pictorial Guide: eastern rocket, Sisymbrium orientale (Brassicaceae), a common non-native urban weed makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
I have just updated my Pictorial Guide (makaques.com/pictorial.htm) to link from each species account to its counterpart in the marvellous new Plant Atlas 2020 from @BSBIbotany.
New to the Pictorial Guide: common purslane (Portulaca oleracea; Portulacaceae), an uncommon casual, or an arable weed in the far south-west makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
New to the Pictorial Guide: Spanish gorse, Genista hispanica (Fabaceae / Leguminosae), an occasional escape with distinctively branching spines makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
New to the Pictorial Guide: pink-headed persicaria, Persicaria capitata, a Himalayan ground-cover plant that sometimes survives in the wild makaques.com/gallery.php?sp…
Today's botanical highlight: bullwort (Ammi majus) at three edge of a harvested crop field. It took me a long time to identify, but the pinnatifid bracts and non-bristly fruits rule everything else out.

Fascinating insight into some personalities of early 20th century British #botany from Chris Dixon @MAKAQueS_keys at @BSBIbotany annual meeting in #Newcastle-upon-Tyne last weekend. For more about John Heslop-Harrison, plants on Rùm and plant refugia: bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…
@MAKAQueS_keys @BSBIbotany That is a very strange looking plant! Let’s page the amazing @thenewgalaxy we always call on him for help with orchids!
@MAKAQueS_keys @BSBIbotany I also had to take a photo of it in Suffolk last week as we don't find it often in Herts. Particularly not the southwest of the county. Strange how these things are pleasing.
@MAKAQueS_keys Joining other entries for members of the genus!! 😀👍

Large drifts of Bog Pimpernel (Anagallis tenella) in the Valley at present. Scarce in Oxon, it's now largely confined to fens. It needs wet open conditions, and the work of our #volunteers scything and raking has really helped it here. #OxfordshireFens #WetlandPlants
Judy Webb, Chair of our Friends group, and the inspiration behind the restoration of the Lye Valley and other fens in Oxon being presented with the British Empire Medal for her services to Conservation of wildlife and habitats in Oxfordshire by the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire.
Have just got myself a copy of @MAKAQueS_keys multi-access plant key - VERY useful for anyone teaching botany in Britain and Ireland. I am grateful for a tool that allows my students to 'pass' a question when they can't answer something confidently! 40 copies please! 🌿🥀🌾🌸😁
@MAKAQueS_keys @BSBIbotany @Love_plants Yes, after the Dyer's Greenweed subsides the meadow is a riot of purple with the Saw-wort and Knapweed 😍
@thorogoodchris1 Bet you didn't know that there are pylon twitchers who travel miles to see different types of pylon? On another note we have O. minor var. flava near me in north Kent and it recently featured in Kent Botany 2019.
This remarkable change in keel colour across Britain was mapped in detail by Terry Crawford & David Jones in 1988 nature.com/articles/hdy19…. The reason for it is unclear, but some evidence suggests bumblebees forage more dark-keeled plants in dull weather nature.com/articles/hdy19…
Great news! 🎉 The Government’s new approach against bovine tuberculosis is a transition from culling to vaccinating badgers 🦡 We've pioneered badger vaccination and we were the first non-Government organisation to prove it can work! Read more 👉 ow.ly/MvSX50yDL3O

We oppose the cull, pioneered badger vaccination & continue to vaccinate on our land & on neighbouring farms. We are frustrated that @DefraGovUK continue to include our land in misleading communications about culling, despite many requests for this to stop ow.ly/yWEe50w6Xa8
