This a wild misnomer to fans who never had the privilege to attend a game at Tiger Stadium or Comiskey Park. Camden Yards deserves a lot of credit for bringing back the baseball only feel and charm plagued by mid-century multi-purpose “cookie-cutter” stadiums, however, the real reason why every owner wanted their own Camden Yards as soon as it opened in 1992 wasn’t the charm, it was because it generated a new source of revenue, the luxury suite. Owners also realized they could get more money for tickets if the seats were in the lower bowl and between the fouls lines. Thus, to them, the more the better. All these factors pushed the upper deck higher and further from the plate. Progressive Field’s, for example, last row of the upper deck is higher than its predecessor Cleveland Municipal Stadium which sat twice as many people. The upper deck at Camden Yards might look like it has a good view because it has a better view outside the ballpark, but you are further away from the action. At ballparks like Tiger Stadium, Comiskey Park and Griffith Stadium you were right on top of the field. You could actually hear the players talk to each other. There was no seat better in baseball history than the front row of the upper deck at Tiger Stadium…

@MLBcathedrals I used to sit upper deck at Comiskey right behind home plate, easy to see strike zone and flight of the ball, good seats only thing lacking was concessions were limited
@MLBcathedrals Attended a series the last year of old Comiskey on the South Side (1990), and walking in you saw the new stadium growing next door. It looked almost twice as tall and we all knew the upper deck tickets should come with oxygen tanks.
@MLBcathedrals Cheep seats are great when you can’t find an usher to get you closer for a little bit of cash. Field level where you can smell the grass is the prize.
@MLBcathedrals Wrigley Field’s Upper Deck is much underrated
@MLBcathedrals I had free tickets once last row upper deck Shea stadium. From there you could see the insane break on a Randy Johnson curve.
@MLBcathedrals Only complaint I have about @Rockies upper deck is the SUN blazing directly into the “home” side (above the dugout) seats for first few innings in the summer (evening games). Haven’t attended this year, but don’t think they have fixed it.
@MLBcathedrals When I briefly lived in Detroit, one night I went to Tiger Stadium and sat in the bleachers, under the overhang with a pole blocking some of the field. I loved it so much I went back the next night.
@MLBcathedrals Last row upper deck Tiger Stadium
@MLBcathedrals Completely agree about the best seats in Tiger Stadium. You saw everything and were so close to the action.
@MLBcathedrals And the lie is laid bare: one of the first reproductions of an “old” ballpark, the Rangers stadium at Arlington, was abandoned in search of more suite income. It was beautiful. Such a shame.
