Nigeria’s military has confirmed that around 200 United States troops deployed to support counterterrorism operations will leave the country, while insisting that security cooperation between Abuja and Washington will continue.
Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, said the withdrawal forms part of a change in the specific mission under which the American personnel were deployed and does not signal an end to the two countries’ defence partnership.
The main contingent is expected to leave Nigeria by late September, although a smaller team of US advisers and intelligence personnel is expected to remain.
The American troops were deployed earlier this year to support Nigeria’s fight against jihadist groups, particularly in the country’s north-east and the wider Lake Chad Basin.
Their role included intelligence sharing, training, technical assistance and support for operations targeting Islamic State-linked militants.
Uba said cooperation between the two countries would continue in areas including intelligence, training and information sharing.
“The relationship between Nigeria and the United States remains strong, enduring, and mutually beneficial,” he said, according to Africanews.
Nigeria and the United States have intensified military cooperation this year against Islamic State and ISWAP fighters. In May, Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters announced that Nigerian forces, working with US counterparts, had killed senior Islamic State commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki in an operation targeting the group’s leadership.
The Nigerian military subsequently said more than 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters were killed in coordinated air strikes around Metele in Borno State as the two countries continued sharing intelligence and targeting information.
The withdrawal comes as Nigeria continues to confront multiple security threats, including the long-running insurgency in the north-east, armed groups operating around the Lake Chad Basin, banditry and mass kidnappings in other parts of the country.
For neighbouring countries such as Cameroon, developments in Nigeria’s counterterrorism operations are closely watched because Boko Haram and ISWAP operate across borders in the Lake Chad region.
Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters says the departure of the main US contingent should therefore be seen as an adjustment to the current mission rather than a termination of American military support.

FECAFOOT Pressures CAF, Demands Reasons for Eto’o's Recent Sanction
The Cameroon Football Federation is mounting pressure on CAF to explain the reasons for sanctioning its President Samuel Eto'o Fils, who is facing a four-match ban.
In a statement on Wednesday, the federation expressed surprise at what it viewed as a sharp contrast between speediness with which the sanction was delivered and the delay in communicating its grounds.
“FECAFOOT is surprised by the contrast between the speed with which the sanction was pronounced […] and the prolonged, even indefinite, delays in communicating the reasons for a decision that affects the reputation and honor of the Federation's President,” the statement read.
CAF’s Disciplinary Board had found Eto’o guilty of violating principles of sportsmanship during the Morocco vs. Cameroon AFCON match in Rabat on January 9, 2026. He was handed a four-match stadium ban for upcoming CAF games and fined 20,000 US Dollars.
The sanction was announced less than two hours after the hearing on January 15, but the exact reason remains pending.
FECAFOOT plans to appeal on the decision but says the appeal can only be filed once the full reasons for the sanction are provided.
FECAFOOT reiterated its commitment to “a fair procedure, respect for reasonable timeframes, and the effectiveness of appeals,” emphasizing the need for transparency to uphold the credibility of sports governance.

Several soldiers, gendarmes, and police officers in Buea are facing legal action for allegedly torturing a civilian and extorting 400,000 FCFA from him. The incident occurred after the victim was stopped at a checkpoint and accused of ties to separatists. The officers reportedly ransacked his home, tortured him, and forced him to withdraw money. After a complaint was filed with the Human Rights Commission, the officers admitted to the abuse and returned the money. Human rights advocate Christopher Tambe Tiku is pushing for their prosecution, calling the incident a disturbing example of ongoing abuse by security forces.
