What were your experiences of wearing a facemask during the COVID-19 pandemic? 😷 Did you get used to it, or did you find it highly irritating?
Getting populations to adopt beneficial behaviours, especially during health crises, can be challenging. Sometimes we are asked to cope with new standards or values (such as mask wearing and social distancing), a psychological process known as ‘social adjustment’.
One option is to use ‘norms nudging’ – this is where a population is told about what everyone else is doing (social norm) in order to encourage desirable behaviour.
A new study looked at the use of norms nudging to promote mask wearing during the pandemic in Colombia 🇨🇴. The researchers found that while norm nudging is effective in small, one-off interventions, this is not always the case when scaling up to population-level challenges.
When planning population-level behavioural change interventions, it’s important to consider the impact of social adjustment dynamics on intended effects.
