Nice Guys, Bad Boys, and Good Men Many young men like me felt awkward in high school. Puberty, feeling attraction for the girls for the first time, wishing they liked us, etc. We were nice, we were sweet, we were polite, we were kind, we wouldn't mistreat a woman. And some of them were friends with us. But we wanted a girlfriend, and none of the girls thought of us in that way. Meanwhile, there was Chad McBikerton, who had a tattoo, who teased and harassed the girls, who was a bad boy. He was often in trouble, he wasn't super attentive in school. But he was confident, assertive, and he just didn't give a shit. And for some reason, the girls, though they talked about what an asshole he was...responded to him. He always had a girlfriend. He'd break her heart in the end, but there was always another. It was absolutely inexplicable. Why on earth would the girls not notice us nice guys, who would be good to them? What was wrong with those girls, that they'd run after Chad? (For some of the men attracted to the redpill stuff, repeat this in adulthood - he finally gets married, only for her to have an affair with Chad, fresh out of prison, and ask for a divorce because she just doesn't feel that way about him anymore.) And there's finally an explanation that the red pill guys give: women, on the primal gut level, aren't looking primarily for kindness or niceness. They want a man who is high value, who is tall and fit, who is an alpha. And they'll make excuses for him, and put obstacles into the betas who don't make the cut. The red pill guys say "women don't care about your struggle - they just stand at the finish line and f*** the winners." You need to learn to be more assertive and be willing to be more of an asshole, like Chad. When these guys hear women say that they want a man who's “kind and gentle,” they blow their top. Now, there's a way that this all makes sense. There was something that Chad had all along that they lacked. He was...well...more of a man, and less of a boy. He wasn't a good citizen, but he was an engaging man who knew what he wanted with some drive and initiative. And when a woman says she wants "a kind and gentle man"...the word "man" in the sentence is doing a lot of heavy lifting. She didn't say she wanted a kind and gentle little boy...she wanted a man. And the "man" bit, quite frankly, is the hard part. It doesn't just happen to us. We have to work at it. We need to learn to take risks, to stick it under pain, to fail and try again, to press on when we are mocked, to get comfortable with discomfort. And none of it to "get the girl" - but just to show that we can hack it in life. Compared to this, the energy needed to just be "gentle and kind" to a lady is pretty small. Those of us who thought that was the whole game, were wrong. We weren't the "man" noun, that was necessary for the "gentle and kind" adjectives to mean anything. Women are "wine tasters" and not "wine makers" when it comes to manhood. They know what they like. They are great judges of masculine vitality. They are less helpful as guides on exactly what process a man needs to go through to become that thing they like. Because women never had to walk that road. But it’s a road we need to walk nonetheless. The world doesn’t need any more nice guys to bore women and leave men uninspired. It doesn’t need more bad boys to break women’s hearts and leave young men fatherless. But good men at scale? That’ll change the world.
