hey, you, you're finally awake by lone-pylon
Vermeer owned no paintings when he died in 1675. The man who captured light better than anyone left behind 37 masterpieces and a mountain of debt his widow couldn't repay.
Most people stare at this painting for years without noticing the mirror reflects a scene that doesn't exist in the room. Velázquez hid a second painting inside Las Meninas. 👁️

Van Gogh sold exactly ONE painting in his lifetime. It sold for 400 francs. Last year, one of his works sold for $117 million. The buyer? His brother's neighbor — who bought it out of pity.
That's not inspiring — that's terrifying. And we've been romanticizing it ever since.
Vermeer owned no paintbrushes when he died in 1675. He left behind 11 children and debts so crushing his wife had to hand over paintings just to pay the baker.
Leonardo spent 3 years on The Last Supper (1495–1498). He left Judas unfinished for months — unable to find a face corrupt enough. He eventually used the face of the church commissioner who kept pressuring him to finish. Petty revenge. Immortalized.
Vermeer painted only ~34 works in his lifetime, yet he captured light so precisely that scientists still debate whether he used a camera obscura. Every canvas is a quiet argument about time standing still.
