Identifying independent and dependent variables painfully reminds me who my low income students are. In math, money depends on how much you buy. In poverty, how much you buy ALWAYS depends on how much money you have.

Got my hair cut yesterday and the woman with the scissors asked what I've been up to lately. I said I wrote a book about physics and she told me that women aren't good at physics because they can't think logically. Possibly I'm a physicist b/c as kid I used to cut my hair myself.

As you prep for another exciting school year, remember that some students are terrified to step into your classroom. My son, adorable as he is, does not want to go back. He doesn’t think he will fit in. He doesn’t think he will be as smart as the others. Proceed accordingly.
