A handwritten sign appeared in the elevator Monday saying, WHOEVER KEEPS WALKING THE BROWN DOG AT MIDNIGHT, PLEASE TEXT ME. I assumed somebody wanted to complain about barking. By Wednesday, three more residents had added their numbers. The dog belongs to an elderly man on the fourth floor who recently had knee surgery, and different neighbors had quietly been taking turns walking her without coordinating. The sign was from a woman trying to create a schedule. They now have a group chat called Linda’s Staff. I joined after covering Friday night. Linda is the dog. Her owner isn’t in the chat because everyone agrees he would try to pay us. Linda is the only resident in the building with seven personal assistants and no rent.

Michael Hingson was on the 78th floor of the North Tower on September 11, 2001. He has been blind since birth. His guide dog, Roselle, was under his desk when the plane hit. The building lurched. Smoke filled the offices. People shouted. Roselle stood, calm, and waited for the harness. They went into Stairwell B and started down. Seventy-eight floors. Firefighters passed them going up. Jet fuel burned in the air. A woman stopped, too afraid to keep walking. Hingson talked her forward. Roselle never pulled away, never panicked, never stopped. They reached the lobby and then the street. Minutes later the South Tower fell and a wall of dust rolled over them. Roselle kept leading. Hingson lived. Roselle lived. They walked out of a building that would not be standing an hour later. He has spent the years since telling the story not as a miracle of sight, but as a story of trust: a man who could not see the stairs, and a dog who did not need to be told that the only way out was down. Remember Michael Hingson. Remember Roselle. Remember everyone who started down those stairs and never reached the street.

More than 300 dogs helped search for survivors on 9/11. In fact, the last person rescued at ground zero was found by a search and rescue dog. The search was mentally and physically taxing on the dogs, who walked across huge piles of debris and smoldering rubble. As the days went by, dogs became sad when they were no longer finding people alive. So, to keep their spirits up, their handlers staged mock rescues. They would have people hide under debris for dogs to find. This boosted the dogs’ morale as they continued their work. In addition to rescue dogs, therapy dogs were brought to the scene to provide comfort to emotionally drained and traumatized police officers and firefighters. Dogs are the best thing in the world and we do not deserve them.

The Dog Who Wouldn't Stop Searching On September 11, 2001, Apollo disappeared into a hole in the rubble at Ground Zero. Then a fireball erupted. Seconds later, the German Shepherd came running back toward his handler, NYPD Officer Peter Davis. Apollo was on fire. Davis brushed the burning embers from his thick coat. And Apollo went right back to searching. Apollo was nine years old—an age when many police dogs had already retired. But that morning, he and Davis became the first canine search-and-rescue team to arrive at Ground Zero. The conditions were brutal. To reach the rubble, Davis later recalled wading through water that came nearly to his waist. Apollo searched across jagged concrete and dangerously hot debris. His coat was singed. His paws became cracked and bruised. Still, he searched. Apollo had been trained to find the living. But as the hours passed, the terrible reality of the site became clearer. Eventually, Davis had to physically pull Apollo away from the debris when the dog refused to stop looking. And Apollo wasn't alone. Search-and-rescue dogs and their handlers worked through wreckage, dust and toxic fumes in the aftermath of the attacks. Apollo became a symbol of all of them. On March 5, 2002, he was awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal for courage and devotion to duty. Apollo had been selected by ballot to receive the honor on behalf of every search-and-rescue dog that had worked at the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Apollo lived to be 14. Twenty-five years later, we remember the people who ran toward danger that morning. Apollo reminds us that not all of them ran on two legs. ❤️🐾

randomly petting your cat while they're asleep and they do the little chirps and stretch out their paws in response is more effective than any antidepressant out there.

we have dogs (small, domestic wolves) and cats (small, domestic lions & tigers), someone really needs to be working on small, domestic bears. I would like a pet bear tyvm

Fun fact, they’ve done studies by playing different cat’s chirps and meows to pet owners and they can often identify their cat’s cry, and identify what the cries mean!!! Cats and their owners develop their own little language. Adult feral cats don’t meow. They do it for us.
