@L_A_Malone A4: Looking at the Queer Theory card, I was struck by #4, "operating outside of binaries." It's interesting how Bechdel and her father almost operate as binaries of each other. Not quite sure how to think about that yet. #isnenged #comicschat
@L_A_Malone A3: benefits: reading comics/graphic novels is a different kind of reading than a straight-up traditional novel, and I think it might appeal to a different set of students--perhaps those who are more visually-inclined.
Hell yeah. My piles of books aren't bad housekeeping, they're good parenting. ;) #isuenged
While this news is not surprising per se, it made me more aware that a major downside of e-books is that their... amp.theguardian.com/books/2018/oct…
Nice take on the "what's appropriate" questions (and it's a graphic novel, too). #isuenged

More thoughts on reading poetry #isuenged
A thought provoking article for teachers of poetry. It might make for a good discussion at the beginning of the school year, especially if students haven’t read a lot of poetry before. #aplitchat theatlantic.com/entertainment/…
The blurred line between "history" and "fiction." Some thought-provoking responses on this thread. #isuenged

Cool approach to drafting, grading, or teaching in general. "Yes, and..." rather than "no." #isuenged
I follow this rule while drafting, but also, as much as possible, while interacting with others. ESPECIALLY kids. Kids hear NO so often — from parents, peers, siblings, society. The more YESes we can give them — in their creative pursuits and elsewhere — the better.
@anterobot The best teachers I have had dealt w/ this elephant did as @anterobot just did: call it out in class, be direct from the start, acknowledge the complexities. How have others seen this handled well (or handled it themselves)? #NCTEchat #WhyIWrite #isuenged
@KathleenSkeals I like your specification of writing "for real purposes" (meaning, I assume, for a reason other than someone is forcing them to for a grade). The idea of writing as larger and more important than "just a class." :) #NCTEChat #WhyIWrite #isuenged
A2: I see the story as a building block of understanding: whether we teach reading or writing, we’re dealing with stories. Ours and others’, looking for connections. What's reading but trying out someone else’s story in juxtaposition with your own? #NCTEchat #WhyIWrite #isuenged
@jthompedu Yes, I agree. Respect of another view, perhaps, rather than "I fully understand." Maybe acknowledging that you *can't* understand, and acknowledging the complexities? #NCTEchat #isuenged
A1: I see empathy as perhaps simply understanding that everyone has a story, and someone else’s might be different than yours. And understanding that, while you can’t live someone else’s story, you can respect (celebrate?) the differences. #nctechat #WhyIWrite #isuenged #nctechat

@ShelfieTalk Oops, archive just popped up. Sorry I missed it! I evidently misread the start time...
A4 I talk with my students about what I'm doing right now. As a grad student, often when they're writing a paper, so am I. It's one way to show that I am practicing what I preach. #shelfietalk #isuenged
@brandonlsams A3: more of a reminder, really: all my classes intersecting makes me realize that in talking about "fiction" we're really conversing about big important "real" stuff. #isuenged
@Jarrett_Lerner @ShelfieTalk Yes, this graphic pretty much illustrates my life (in AND outside of grad school). #isuenged
