In 1985, 20-year-old Doc Gooden had the greatest pitching season all-time He won the Triple Crown with 24 W, 268 K, 1.53 ERA. Johan Santana is the only pitcher to win a Triple Crown since. His 12.2 WAR and 1.53 ERA are the best since the mound was lowered in 1969. Out of 35 the starts he mad , 33 of them were quality starts. Thats the highest percentage of QS ever in a single season. He only allowed more than 3 ER once and pitched fewer than 6 innings just twice. He’s the youngest pitcher ever with an ERA+ over 200 and the only one ever under 25 to do so. He didn’t allow an earned run for the entire month of September while the Mets were fighting for a playoff spot with the Cardinals. This all culminated in him being the youngest Cy Young winner ever, a mark that will likely never be beat. Congratulations to Doc on having his number retired! Very deserved for one of the best to ever wear a Mets jersey 👏👏👏👏👏
@MetsdUp absolute legend. 🔥 @Terps17TV @GiraffeNeckMarc
@MetsdUp Jake was awesome in his prime.....but nothing compares to 1985
@MetsdUp Congratulations on Dwright Goodens number being retired and honored
@MetsdUp In an era now where we cross our fingers that someone, anyone, will throw a pitch in the 7th inning, this 20 yr old dominated and was the best in the world. His arm paid the price. Innings limits may have prolonged his greatness. Will we never see this again in today’s game.
@MetsdUp You left out that year he had 16! Complete games, 8 of them being complete game shutouts 😂😂 like how dude? How??!!
@MetsdUp Interesting fact abt Doc’s 1985 season. We all remember the 16-13 July 4th game in Atlanta that went 19innings… but does anyone remember that Dwight Gooden started that gm? After 2 rain delays he only went 2.1IP.
@MetsdUp One of the games he didn't go 6 innings was because there was a rain delay in the early innings and he didn't return. That was the famous July 4-5 19 inning game in Atlanta.
@MetsdUp The beginning of his career was magical.he was also a pretty good hitter.
