If @sama threatens starting a rival AGI lab (not similarly controlled by a nonprofit board!) if he’s fired, then he’s not fit to serve as the CEO of OpenAI
The job of the nonprofit board has been to replace the CEO, and otherwise not get in their way and just review their job. This was the idea behind the OpenAI corporate structure and the core of what ensures it functions as a nonprofit
To be at least slightly fair, we don't have evidence of Sam having made that threat in advance of him being fired in an unusual way. I agree that if Sam earlier said something like "what are you going to do, fire me, I'll come back with another company" that would've been just cause to fire him immediately; but the Board hasn't yet claimed that Sam said this.
@Mihonarium @sama mikhail I'm sorry but the markets are at like 85% of him returning
He isn't a current employee of OpenAI, though. So he would rather be presenting it as his career opportunities, and would be negotiating for things that makes OpenAI's offer attractive enough for him to accept. I have done this myself in the past. I was exploring building something in a space, and I interviewed for roles at competing companies. Always transparent that I am considering building something on my own but that I wanted to evaluate if I am better off joining their team instead.
@Mihonarium @sama That's how the game works, of course he's going to start another AI company and of course people loyal to him are going to follow. They tried to pull a power play and got put in their place.
@Mihonarium @sama where do you get the idea from that the new lab wouldn't have some kind of control mechanism?
@Mihonarium @sama He wouldn’t be starting a “lab”, he’d be starting a for-profit co, which is far better than a decelerationist money pit.
@Mihonarium @sama He was reportedly more or less starting to do that, as the trigger to this incident.
