Why do certain groups so often take to the streets in so-called "fuel riots"? My new @CSSHJournal article uses an unusual comparison of US truckers in the 1970s + North Indian farmers in the 1980s to pilot an energy-centered but inductive approach to class doi.org/10.1017/S00104…
10 papers in ecological economics that changed me. 1. The Economics of the Coming Spaceship Earth (Boulding, 1966). Concisely covers most core principles of ecological economics, comparing the “cowboy” economy we have with the “spaceman” economy we need. eeeforum.org/wp-content/upl…
Looking forward to this!!

Now in print _Antimonopoly and American Democracy_, with essays by Richard White, Naomi Lamoreaux, Daniel Crane, Bill Novak, myself, and others. It high time we “reframed” the monopoly question to decenter consumer welfare and turn attention to democracy, freedom, and justice.
Thanks to the @HarvardHBS 's courtesy, had a wonderful time in Boston as an Alfred Chandler Travel Fellow this summer. Lucky to find fascinating documents and photos, including this awesome picture of shipping petroleum products before oil tankers.

I just finished Revolutionary Power: An Activist's Guide to the Energy Transition by Shalanda Baker and wanted to share what I've learned with #energytwitter. IMO this book should be required reading for energy wonks -- energy is as much sociopolitical as it is technical. A 🧵
Folks, Who are some peeps out there - could be you, could be a friend or someone you know of - who are *currently* working on the history of standards and standardization? Asking for a bud.

NEW FACULTY BOOK! Carbon Technocracy: Energy Regimes in Modern East Asia by Victor Seow. A forceful reckoning with the relationship between energy and power through the history of what was once East Asia’s largest coal mine. press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book…
Great piece by the Vienna school people on the Marshall Plan as an energy transition. Postwar welfare is carbon technocracy !
I believe an antimonopoly philosophy and program rooted in popular and historical understandings of fairness, justice, and democracy is far more compelling (and also more likely to succeed) than one tied to promoting "competitive markets."
Well put. Anti-monopoly in the US since 1776 has three strands: (1) opposition to unfair trade practices; (2) revulsion at the hoarding of natural resources (including education); (3) condemnation of wasteful business practices. Competitive markets were mostly a means to an end.

Few pre-1880 magazines ran advertisements, making them very different from the most influential pre-1880 newspapers. Authors sometimes got paid for content, but they relied on the platform (the magazine) to cut checks. Some journalists—eg Mark Twain—had marquee value. But $$?

When consumer welfare advocates market the benefits of "efficiencies," a natural follow-up should be efficiencies for who? Most of the time it is for the financiers and corporate owners rather than consumers or workers. Senator Sherman knew this back in 1890. 👇 #antitrust
