@AggieFiringLine @IowaResideav @TraviXai But it’s certainly a great incentive to find alternate employment like treasure digging! Looking at a stone in a hat and telling other people where to dig certainly beats working on the rock farm all day.
@m3lonh3ad @TraviXai Help me understand your comment Daniel - are you saying that Joseph wrote impressive letters 15 years after he translated the Book of Mormon? Or that Emma’s quote is from later in life?
But he also gets so much wrong that it makes it look like he was making it up. We can’t just selectively look at the hits while ignoring the misses and anachronisms. To use a somewhat silly example, if you see a near-perfect and authentic portrait of George Washington that seemingly was painted in the year 1800, but he’s holding an iPhone in the portrait, we can pretty conclusively determine that the entire portrait is a fraud.
@JS_StrngstSldr Assume I’m a reasonably intelligent person, but not super competent in this field. How would you explain to me why this alternate version of reading hieroglyphs is more likely then Joseph Smith pretending he could read Egyptian and making it up?
@TraviXai You’ve got to stop sharing this slop. It’s not convincing to anyone who knows better, and doesn’t help believing Mormons when they inevitably realize that this stuff is misrepresenting reality.
@NilsBabcock73 @daxiel1992 Must not have been wearing his garments either… Are you really suggesting that Joseph Smith is comparable to Jesus Christ? That isn’t exactly going to help the stereotype of Mormons worshipping Joseph 😅
@NilsBabcock73 @daxiel1992 That actually helps explains how Joseph Smith died in Carthage. It was too hot so he took his garments off and then his faith couldn’t protect him!
@deseretnoise @Latterdaytruth Perhaps it’s lazy criticism, but also emblematic of a lazy God that used to be pumping out revelations in Joseph Smith’s day. We haven’t had a new revelation in the Church since 1978, and arguably not since 1918. Why is God silent now when we need Him more than ever?
@Matt187487 @RigdonNancy3 Income =/= increase. Those are not interchangeable terms in any way, despite what the modern church may imply
My point is simply this - taking an unconfirmed and anachronistic claim and breaking it into component pieces so you can claim it is 75% confirmed is ludicrous. However - that apologetic approach helps members feel like the Book of Mormon is being proven more and more correct over time. I would encourage you to not share bad science on here and promote it like it’s a big win for Mormonism
Here’s a specific example from Roper’s own research. In his 2025 paper (Chapter 7), Roper classifies: #196 Metal Plates: CONFIRMED #197 Israelite Writing on Metal: CONFIRMED #198 Scripture Inscribed on Metal: CONFIRMED #199 Writing on Metal Plates in the New World: UNCONFIRMED See the problem? He takes one anachronism (e.g., Brass Plates), breaks it apart into pieces, and then magically it becomes confirmed. Codices didn’t exist at that time, yet somehow we have three confirmed anachronisms in SUPPORT of the Book of Mormon from Roper’s work. Nobody disputes that ancient people engraved things on metal. But a short biblical blessing on a silver amulet (Ketef Hinnom), a Persian foundation inscription, or an inventory of buried treasure (Copper Scroll) is not remotely the same thing as hundreds of pages of scripture and historical narrative engraved on metal leaves bound together like a book. Ryan Thomas examined this precise issue in Dialogue, “The Gold Plates and Ancient Metal Epigraphy” (2019), and found that the Book of Mormon’s metal recordkeeping tradition lacks credible historical parallels in ancient Israel. Roper’s methodology takes evidence for a much broader, less controversial practice and scores it as confirmation of something considerably more specific. That’s what I mean by apologetics wearing a lab coat.
@grok @JS_StrngstSldr @JS_StrngstSldr I know AI can miss things on occasion, do you have any sources or studies you would point people to that would support your apologetic argument?
@grok @JS_StrngstSldr @JS_StrngstSldr what is Grok missing here?
@JS_StrngstSldr @grok help me understand this cryptographic argument in the context of this thread and Egyptology. Is this a fair apologist argument for Joseph smiths mistranslations?
