Herefordshire Council says SEND need is “urgent” — yet approved a £13m mainstream school expansion delivering zero SEND places. At a time of cancelled SEND provision and rising out-of-county costs, this mismatch deserves scrutiny. This isn’t a funding problem. It’s a priorities problem.

Herefordshire Council says SEND provision is in crisis and specialist school funding has just been pulled. Yet days earlier it approved a £13 million expansion at a mainstream school delivering zero SEND places, while evidencing no demonstrable improvement in educational outcomes. That contradiction speaks for itself.

Interesting to read Herefordshire Council’s statement yesterday describing an “urgent need for specialist SEND places” and the high cost of independent placements. How does this sit alongside the £13.1m Aylestone expansion approved with zero SEND provision just days earlier? Asking for families.
