Aerial insectivores in the area include these bat species and at-risk Bank Swallows. The proposed development plans to destroy two riparian wetland areas and impact the riparian zone with the racetrack & associated construction. 4/n
Under the Alberta Wildlife Act, bat hibernation habitat is protected. Bat species in the area include AB listed Western Small-footed Myotis, endangered Little Brown Myotis and Big Brown Bats. 3/n
Recent work by our program & a conservation partner has found that there was significant winter bat activity very close to this site. The riparian with steep banks provides habitat for roosting bats. This may be one of the most important hibernation sites for bats in AB! 2/n

This disinformation campaign seeks to undermine our strongest evidence, to re-entrench punitive drug laws (that are largely responsible for the current toxic drug crisis), restrict access to healthcare services for people who use drugs & introduce measures like forced treatment
The disinformation campaign underway against both safer supply and broader harm reduction initiatives in Canada is both purposeful and deliberate. It is being used to serve political ends, ignoring the substantial research evidence that now exists for harm reduction approaches.
Our team is not against nuanced & thoughtful discussion of the role of safer supply as one element of a spectrum of responses to drug use. Instead, our aim is to map out how the current rhetoric around safer supply is part of an active disinformation campaign
Finally, we examine the impacts this moral panic may have on drug policy – because moral panics can have very real effects. Here, we use @AlexStevensKent idea of the ‘moral sidestep’ to examine how moral panics can be used to avoid grounding policy in the best available evidence:

We also outline how the current rhetoric around safer supply is out of sync with research evidence showing strongly positive impacts from safer supply – including significant reductions in overdose deaths and improvements in clinical outcomes among people who receive it.
Here, it's important to note the way in which the current reaction and rhetoric from certain sectors about safer supply is completely out of sync with existing evidence. We examine how anecdote is being privileged over & above research evidence.
Second, we explore criteria for moral panics & map out the current rhetoric on safer supply in relation to this. Similar to previous moral panics, a key feature of the moral panic over safer supply is the lack of formal evidence underlying the claims being amplified.
