Today is #Juneteenth, commemorating the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally able to claim their freedom. In a conversation filmed at @SpaceCenterHou, @AstroVicGlover reflects on the holiday and its history.
@NASA @SpaceCenterHou @AstroVicGlover Wasn’t it, 1882 after the battle of Antietam, that Lincoln proclaimed the emancipation proclamation? Wasn’t it 1863 that’s the law went into effect?Why not celebrate those days? Yet we celebrate, news that arrived late?
@NASA @NASA_Wallops @SpaceCenterHou @AstroVicGlover You haven't been back to the moon since the 1970s.. What have you done for us with all the hundreds of billions in tax money we gave you? Stop the social crap, do your jobs.
@NASA @SpaceCenterHou @AstroVicGlover He's such an inspiration 👌
@NASA @SpaceCenterHou @AstroVicGlover I wonder just who released them... Shame on you.
@NASA @NASASun @SpaceCenterHou @AstroVicGlover Hilarious.
@NASA @SpaceCenterHou @AstroVicGlover ....and what, exactly, is the connection between NASA and slavery? I get it, woke is woke, but surely NASA should be staying in its well-known lane, and stay out of racial history and politics.
@NASA @NASAKennedy @SpaceCenterHou @AstroVicGlover Can you name one????
@NASA @SpaceCenterHou @AstroVicGlover The proper day to elaborate the end of slavery would be Dec. 6. It was on that day the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery was ratified. Slavery didn't end /the Emancipation Proclamation nor did it end in June of 1865. There were slave auctions as late as November of that year.
