The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) condemns the incident on April 10, 2024, at University of California Berkeley Law School Dean Erwin Chemerinsky and Professor Catherine Fisk’s home. Read our statement in the images 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼
@NLGnews Yes, Fisk overreacted, but this was disruption of an event in a private residence. This was not protected speech. It took the student almost 2 minutes to agree to leave after being asked repeatedly. It was trespass. And don’t forget the antisemitic poster!
Dean Chemerinsky, Dean of @BerkeleyLaw has no "complicity" in the war between Israel and Gaza. Further, the student had no First Amendment rights in the home of Dean Chemerinsky and Prof. Fisk. The fact that not only did a third-year law student think she did, but that the self-proclaimed "Guild" she consulted apparently thinks she did is alarming. Dean Chemerinsky is a leading expert in Constitutional law and federal practice. He protected as free speech anti-Jewish racist posters with his likeness, posted both on social media and in the Law School building--all originating with the student organization of which Ms. Afaneh is co-president. He had in fact, protected that group in the past. Your libelous remark about Dean Chemerinsky, your appalling ignorance of the First Amendment, the faulty counsel you evidently gave Ms. Afaneh, your complicity in this event calls your 501(c)(3) nonprofit status into serious question.
@NLGnews You have no credibility among those of us with moral standards. x.com/luketress/stat…

@NLGnews The professor definitely had no business touching the student — but it’s completely irresponsible and reckless to misstate the applicability of 1A just because you support the student’s viewpoint.
@NLGnews You certainly don’t represent the opinions of this lawyer. She was trespassing, she would not stop and most likely even in California you are allowed to protect your castle. Can’t wait till it happens to everyone of you. No one here will shed a tear.
Op-Ed Criticized Guild's Support of Terrorism, That Is All The thrust of the article is that the National Lawyers Guild, on the day after the Oct. 7 massacres and before Israel entered Gaza, praised the Hamas rapes, beheadings and kidnappings as entirely justified “military actions.” I criticized the guild for its support of terrorism and its insensitivity toward the Israeli victims, Alan M. Dershowitz writes.
