Cambrian Period (about 500 million years ago): During this ancient era, CO₂ levels were remarkably high, reaching as much as 4,000 parts per million (ppm) in the atmosphere. That is 10 times the level of CO2 the Earth is experiencing today. It's interesting to note that the Tipping Point we keep hearing about did not happen back then. Also, it is important to note that ice core data and recent Studies have shown CO2 lags temperature increases, which would indicate that CO2 is not the controlling variable of our climate.
