Omikuji in a bookstore. A gacha in a bourbon bar. Omakase at a hotel restaurant.
All three leave the call to chance, or to the shop.
Which choice would you be glad to hand over?
A Fukuoka hotel restaurant lets diners leave the whole meal to the chef.
The course is called "Carte Blanche": the season's ingredients and the chef's instincts shape the meal. In Japanese, that's omakase.
Would you hand over the whole meal, or just one dish?
A Shinjuku bourbon bar lets a gacha pick your next glass.
For a limited time, its all-you-can-drink plan comes with a capsule-toy-style machine: turn the handle, and the gacha decides what you drink next.
Gacha, or your own pick?
A library gives you chance meetings with books you'd never pick.
One bookstore has turned meetings like that into a service.
Would you try a bookstore service built around chance encounters?
At the library, Haru hasn't opened a single book.
Haru is watching the returns cart instead, where books somebody chose and read pile up one by one. Sakura picks up the top one: "I'd never, ever reach for a title like this."
Would you borrow it anyway?
This fall in Japan, a bookstore📕, a bar🥃 and a hotel restaurant🍴 each handed their customers' choice to chance🎲, or to the chef.🧑🍳
Why would anyone give up the freedom to choose?👼

A hand towel you turn a little after each use.
A Japanese housewares maker sells one for the sink, kitchen, or toilet: turn it, and a dry part comes around.
How often does the towel by your sink actually get changed?
Shiseido's answer to people skipping cleanser: a gummy you never lather.
Wet it and your face, glide it over your skin, rinse. The Nikkei says one lasts about three months at twice a day, for about fifteen dollars.
If one step of your skincare could disappear, which would you pick?
An idea spread online: skipping cleanser is better for your skin.
In Japan, young people who rinse with water instead have been called the "face-wash cancel" crowd. Shiseido's experts say water alone may not get all the dirt off.
Water only in the morning: would you defend it or drop it?
Half of the women aged 15 to 29 in a 2023 Shiseido survey said they didn't use cleanser in the morning.
Sakura, asked the same question in a drugstore, admits she just used water.
This morning: cleanser, or just water?
That heart-shaped gummy on a Japanese drugstore shelf isn't candy.
It's a face cleanser from Shiseido, a Japanese cosmetics company. Sakura picked it up thinking she'd found the candy shelf.
Would a cleanser shaped like candy make you more likely to use it, or less?
