Cotton replacing sheep was a mistake in human history. Growing cotton takes many more steps and far more labor, and cotton fields can also bring ecological damage. Raising sheep gives us both food and cloth, many gains at once. The sheep needs only the hillside and the rain God gives, and a haircut once a year, and it keeps us warm. God provided our clothing long ago: "The lambs are for thy clothing" (Proverbs 27:26). "Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds" (Proverbs 27:23). Man set God's provision aside, and got the whip on the slave's back, mill hands queuing for relief, and a dead sea. Restore nature. Choose natural.

In 1727, 23-year-old Jonathan Edwards married 17-year-old Sarah Pierpont. Over thirty-one years of marriage, eleven children were born into their home. Edwards was a preacher of the Great Awakening in colonial America. By day he wrote great works of theology and led his church in revival, but worship at home never gave way: every day the whole family gathered as he led his wife and children in prayer and Bible reading, all eleven children, not one missing. For this family, godliness was not a weekend program. It was the air they breathed every day. In 1900, the American educator A. E. Winship published a study tracing some 1,400 descendants of Jonathan and Sarah Edwards. Among them he found 13 college presidents, 65 college professors, more than 100 lawyers, 30 judges, 60 physicians, more than 100 clergymen, missionaries and theological professors, and more than 80 holders of public office, including 3 U.S. senators, 3 state governors, and a Vice President of the United States (their grandson Aaron Burr). For contrast, Winship drew on R. L. Dugdale's study of another family, "the Jukes." Of some 1,200 members, 310 were professional paupers, 130 were convicted criminals, and 7 were murderers. Only 20 of the 1,200 ever learned a trade, and 10 of those learned it in state prison. The difference between the two families was not intelligence but foundation: the Edwards family taught the Word of God to every child from the start, while the Jukes "neglected all religious privileges, defied and antagonized the church and all that it stands for." "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge" (Proverbs 1:7) "And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up." (Deuteronomy 6:7) Edwards died in 1758, and Sarah died the same year. They left little property. What they left were the calluses on eleven children's knees from praying to God, and fourteen hundred descendants. The most precious thing a family can pass on has never been a house or savings. It is the time the whole family kneels together before God every day. ———————————— Sources: 1. A. E. Winship, Jukes-Edwards: A Study in Education and Heredity, 1900. God gave the olive tree and its oil, and the fat of cattle and sheep. Yet unscrupulous factories took cottonseed, the waste of cotton, made it into oil, and passed it off as "olive oil," then called it "lard," and finally "vegetable oil." "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" (Isaiah 5:20) "Depart from evil, and do good" (Psalm 34:14), this is the only rightful source of wealth.

God made nature as a balanced ecosystem. He set cattle and sheep as the essential middle channel that turns sunlight, through plants, into energy for human life. Restoring the world's herds and flocks, so that mankind's earthly home comes back into global balance, is the responsibility of every person on earth. "He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth;" (Psalm 104:14) Restore nature. Choose natural.

(Genesis 1:1) "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." (Genesis 1:2) Day 1, God made light: Genesis 1:3 Day 2, God made the firmament: Genesis 1:7 Day 3, God made the earth and the seas: Genesis 1:10; God made the plants, each after his kind: Genesis 1:12 Day 4, God made the sun, the moon and the stars: Genesis 1:16 Day 5, God made the fish and the birds, each after his kind: Genesis 1:21 Day 6, God made the beasts and the cattle, each after his kind: Genesis 1:25. God first prepared everything man would need, and then created man in His own image: Genesis 1:27 God gave the green herb to the beasts for food: Genesis 1:30 "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." (Genesis 1:31) This is the law and the ecology of God's creation, in perfect order, not to be overstepped. Man was formed from the dust and lives by God's breath: "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." (Genesis 2:7) In the beginning, man ate the herbs, vegetables and fruits that grew as the light shone upon the earth: "Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat." (Genesis 1:29) God put man into the garden of Eden "to dress it and to keep it" (Genesis 2:15). But the man did not keep it. The old serpent, the Devil and Satan, tempted the woman; she believed his lie and ate the forbidden fruit: Genesis 3:6. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) After man sinned, fruits and vegetables could no longer come close to meeting the energy and calories he needed to survive. Man needed covering, and he needed energy and strength. God Himself slew animals and made garments of their skins: "Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them." (Genesis 3:21) Abel kept sheep for food and for offering: "And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof." (Genesis 4:4) From this we know the flock is the foundation of human life. After the flood God said: "Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things." (Genesis 9:3) This is the chain of life God ordained: light makes the plants grow, the plants feed the sheep and other animals, and the sheep and other animals give mankind fat, protein, cholesterol, wool and hides: "He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man." (Psalm 104:14) "Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs." (Deuteronomy 32:14) "The lambs are for thy clothing." (Proverbs 27:26) "And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household." (Proverbs 27:27) More than that, God chose the lamb to redeem mankind: "God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering." (Genesis 22:8) "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." (John 1:29) God made nature. Cherish nature. Choose natural.

Genesis: 🧵2/10 The Covering Garment, the Patriarchs' Flocks, Not a Thread After the flood, Noah lay uncovered in his tent. "And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness." Genesis 9:23 One garment covered a father's shame, and kept a son's honor. In Abram's day, the flock was the family's wealth. "And the Lord hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses." Genesis 24:35 Flocks were named before silver and gold, a sign of God's blessing. Yet Abram would take nothing unjust. He swore to the king of Sodom: "That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich." Genesis 14:23 His wealth came from God, and not one thread from man. A garment, a flock, a single thread. All of them tell us that food and clothing come from God's blessing, to be received with reverence and a clean heart.

Genesis: 🧵1/10 The First Garment, the First Shepherd, the First Offering The first garment in Scripture was made by God's own hand: "Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them." Genesis 3:21 From the very beginning, clothing was God's loving care. In the next generation, man took up a calling: "Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground." Genesis 4:2 Of the first two occupations ever recorded, one was shepherding. "Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering." Genesis 4:4 From the beginning, God was the center. Offering the flock in worship and praise to God was the foundation of daily life. The sheep Abel tended still clothe us today in woven wool, still among the finest of fabrics. Wool breathes, stays warm even when damp, and returns to nature when its work is done. Handed down for thousands of years, wool remains one of the finest gifts of nature, made by God.

Wool is now about 1% of the fibre the world wears. In 1960 it was a tenth. The sheep did not change. The customer was changed for her. The figures are from the industry's own counts. Polyester alone is more than half of all fibre made today, and when you add nylon, acrylic and

Wool was medieval England's gold. Even today, the Lord Speaker in the House of Lords sits on the Woolsack, a reminder of where the nation's wealth once came from. A single fiber built castles.
