3: We hope to continue the excavations in Drelsdorf next year, to gain further insight into the connection between finds, sediments and ultimately the humans occupying the site! uf.phil.fau.de/2023/09/29/nea…

2: The site has been known from surface collecting since the 1970s and is the northernmost identified Middle Paleolithic site. The excavation yielded exciting results with lithic finds occurring more frequent in one layer.

1: NeanderEDGE fieldwork collaboration: in September 2023 we had a three-week excavated in Drelsdorf, North Frisia, Schleswig-Holstein together with great colleagues from @ufg_erlangen as well as @MarcelWei82, Mara Weber and Sönke Hartz!

Emil Schou Nielsen, Ph.D. student. Finding the haystacks. With a master in geoscience and experience from geotechnical investigations, he's studying interglacial deposits for Neanderthal sites, the paleoenvironment and -landscape, and hopefully stumble over a Neanderthal 🤞

The next weeks you will get a presentation of all of the bright NeanderEDGE team-members. First up is our PI Trine, who's the brain behind this cool (glacial humor, right?❄️) project!

PI @TrineKellberg, Associate Professor, PhD. I have been passionate about Neanderthals since my first encounter with them at the site of Neumark-Nord in 2008 (if I remember correctly). I remember finding my first lithic and elephant tooth and tusk. A game-changing experience. 🧵

This week Dr. Katharine MacDonald is visiting us in the @NeanderEDGE team at @AU_Archaeology - we are working on a paper and hope to see some nice progress though an intense workshop. Long discussions on Neanderthal mobility and adaptation seems unavoidable!

A small correction; I of course meant to write Fennoscandinavia, as Finland is not part of Scandinavia sensu stricto

Are there secure Neanderthal finds in contemporary Scandinavia? short answer is no, but there are some sites that through the years have been suggested to be evidence of Neanderthals in Scandinavia. A thread🧵:

For another thread: most of these sites are geologically or geographically problematic due to landscape restructuring during the last interglacal-glacial period. So it is also necessary to prove that these places were even accessible for humans. More on this later.

5) Laduholmen: Interestingly one of the wooden implements showed traces of human modification! Unfortunately the implement has since disappeared and no photos exists. So we cannot be certain if Neanderthals made a fire here >40.000 years ago.
