Tarragona has better Roman ruins than most of Italy, and you'll have them to yourself Barcelona is 1.5 hours north by train. People treat Tarragona as a layover at best. That's a mistake. The amphitheatre sits directly on the sea. The aqueduct cuts through olive groves without a ticket booth in sight. The old city wall is 2,000 years old and you can walk it with nobody else around. Rome's Forum has better PR, not better ruins.

Valencia is the Spain 🇪🇸 that Barcelona thinks it is. Barcelona sells the idea. Valencia is the actual thing. Smaller crowds, real neighborhoods, people who live there full-time instead of cycling through for a long weekend. Paella came from Valencia, from open fires and albufera rice fields. Most of what gets served everywhere else in Spain isn't wrong, it's just unrelated. The mistake isn't going to Barcelona. It's going to Barcelona and thinking you've seen Spain.
