#India: We are concerned by reports of mass detentions of demonstrators, protest leaders, members of civil society organisations, lawyers and journalists, before and during today’s large-scale demonstrations in Delhi. We call on the authorities to ensure that the right to peaceful assembly is fully respected and fulfilled. ohchr.org/en/press-relea…

Unfortunately, few who debate the rights and wrongs of the S.I.R. exercise make their arguments based on facts In West Bengal, nearly 27 lakhs were removed from the electoral rolls under S.I.R. Of these, 22,21,196 filed appeals to Tribunals A little over 1 lakh appeals were disposed of by the Tribunals. (The number is reported to be 1,26,000 appeals) 91-93% of the appeals were ALLOWED and the names were directed to be re-included in the electoral rolls That is the damning evidence against the S.I.R. exercise

If someone is demanding transparency from the Election Commission regarding SIR or Form 6, there is no reason to fear questions : if everything was done correctly, transparency will only strengthen the truth. Our ideology, political choices and future are safe only ...

You can support any political party or ideology you believe in, but never let political loyalty make you forget the most basic democratic right : the Right to Vote. We elect our MLAs, MPs and Ministers; they do not elect us.

And if you cannot do anything else, at least smile :) but please do not abuse someone simply because they are speaking up for the rights of others.

Our ideology, our political choices and our democratic rights are safe only as long as we have the genuine freedom to exercise our Right to Vote. So think. Question. Understand the issue before choosing a side.

If we want the freedom to continue choosing our representatives according to our own judgment, we must protect the integrity of the electoral process. If someone is demanding transparency from the Election Commission, let them ask questions.

Support whoever you believe in: but never forget why you started supporting that person in the first place. And never forget that an MLA, MP or Minister holds that position because citizens elected them. They did not elect us.

But if, in the process of blindly supporting a particular politician, we forget all of this, then who ultimately suffers? Not just others. We suffer too. Our future generations suffer. Our society, villages, cities, states and the country suffer.

We elect our representatives so that they can work for our streets, neighbourhoods, communities and cities, address the concerns of marginalised people, and work towards basic necessities such as education, employment and healthcare.

The purpose of having an independent Election Commission is to ensure that citizens can freely choose their representatives and vote according to their own judgment.
