"In 2020 @CNRS (central French research body) paid €3 million in APCs [...] we're on the verge of ruin." "Evaluation reform is indispensable [to change] [so] @CNRS has modified its evaluation guidelines" On paper, yes. But did everyone get the memo? No. cnrs.fr/en/node/7763
For as long as the scientific enterprise remains beholden to corporate profit machines like Elsevier, Springer-Nature, etc., we are in NO position to tell society at large to break its dependence on other corporate profit machines. This should be so obvious as to burn ones eyes.
I've written before (reporterre.net/Face-au-rechau… text in French) on the hypocrisy of science asking society to fix its problems while willfully avoiding fixing its own: Half the studies cited in this 2019 eco-tribune signed by 11258 scientists were paywalled. academic.oup.com/bioscience/art…
Things scientists (rightfully) think rich nations should do: 1. Radically change our lifestyles. 2. Compensate those who will suffer from lack of change. Yet as scientists we can't even lead by example of "radical" change and drop corporate glam mags who siphon research money!

This is the kind of enlightened and morally responsible response one might consider sending to for-profit journals if/when declining to review. This is the morally correct attitude for science to hold. Not asking for a piece of the profits (i.e. to be paid piecemeal to review).
@guardian Only 2 of those 21 prestige journals are fully open access, meaning labs can also decide not to publish OA with them. In this case, the £7,000 is instead financed via billion pound institutional subscription fees. Either way, publishing in them costs a fortune...in public money.
Good to see @guardian paying attention to this issue, but they omitted to underline that the £2,700 article processing fee that caused a walk-out at this particular journal are at the *bottom* end of what those fees can be. Twenty one of Elsevier's journals charge over £7,000.

Now is an exciting time to be preparing a new open publishing platform (nmop.io). Feels like there's something in the air. We're finally reaching breaking point with big commercial publishers. 🎉 Hoping to start building it in earnest some time this year. 🤞

And, naturally, we could go through the entire glam journal APC shopping list, and in every case, the pay-to-publish fee is going to be higher than $3,450. Cell: $10,100 Neuron: $9,080 Nature Comm.: $6,290 Current Biology: $6,830 Trends In Neuroscience: $6,830 etc., etc., etc...
RTing this again because it's worth highlighting the trigger for this important and, most of all, wise move on the part of the editors: Elsevier set the APC to $3,450. That's why they took action. Now, APCs at Nature are $11,690. So, what kind of action should *that* trigger?

Logically, morally, and, most importantly, efficaciously we can't expect governments + politicians to act with respect to Big Pharma in a way we relentlessly demonstrate ourselves to be incapable of with respect to the racketeers who control academic publishing. #integrity 3/3
...as publicly funded and published researchers in *any* domain, the core arguments found therein equally apply to us with respect to Big Publishing. 2/3
I fully agree with this open letter, signed by a host of experts and dignitaries, calling on governments to pull control of largely publicly funded research, e.g. #COVID #vaccine research, out of the profiteering hands of #BigPharma. app.box.com/s/016uv7schj90… However... 1/3
Entire ERC budget for 2022: ~US$2.6 billion, destined to fund 1,100 grants. erc.europa.eu/news/erc-2022-… Elsevier profits for 2022: US$1.3 billion... or the equivalent of 550 ERC grants. relx.com/investors/annu… Researcher addiction to the legacy model is pathological for science.
A short argument for why I think the big publishers cannot be part of a publishing reform effort. See the full (but still short) article over on Mastodon at neuromatch.social/@neuralreckoni… or below for a short summary.

I fully agree with this open letter, signed by a host of experts and dignitaries, calling on governments to pull control of largely publicly funded research, e.g. #COVID #vaccine research, out of the profiteering hands of #BigPharma. app.box.com/s/016uv7schj90… However... 1/3
Every journal should have a negative impact factor (NIF) calculated for it. Compounded oversights like this one would rightly send a journal's NIF through the roof. Then regular IF should be divided by NIF to provide a clearer estimation of a journal's reliability factor.
Tessier-Lavigne immediately contacted Science and agreed to follow up. Working with Science editorial, Tessier-Lavigne prepared Errata for both papers. However, due to an error on our part, Science never posted these Errata. (2/3)
I'll never be able to come to terms with the fact that academics, explicitly or tacitly, agreed to the installation of coin slot turnstiles on the temple of collective human knowledge. Never. How on earth does one reconcile that with any kind of "enlightenment" values? #paywalls
The internet provided the opportunity to create the greatest global public library imaginable, and we just allowed a bunch of racketeers to stroll in and take the ball off us. How do so many of the "smartest" people in the world not grasp the insanity of that historical reality?
Hey @lexfridman; if you were genuine in this tweet from last year, and I believe you were, why now publish with @Nature, being historically one of the most extreme enemies of the ideal you expressed here? Neither you nor @hubermanlab need either the exposure or the extra prestige
It’s a pleasure to convene with @lexfridman to complete our paper for @Nature @NatureNeuro — this one has been a long time coming!
Further important progress in the area of research assessment, this time from @EU_Commission, which has also just endorsed @DORAssessment "...a common direction for changes in assessment...with the goal to maximise the quality and impact of research." 🙌 research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu/news/all-resea…
Good to see. From my experience in France, all too many researchers don't even know what @DORAssessment is, let alone that their parent body is signed up to it (which it almost certainly is: CNRS, INSERM, most universities..), so such statements may help. sfdora.org/wp-content/upl…
"These new findings are so exciting! Let's use the world wide web to share them with the whole scientific community at once!" "We could do that, we have the technology. BUT how about we instead send them to just 1 person, then if he likes them he'll send them to 3 people, then.."
