Will the Equal Suffrage League suggest a property test to limit women's voting? @lilamvalentine @LanghorneLewis Only the poll tax would be left. I imagine African American women would be willing to go hungry to pay their $1.50 to vote. @MrsFDWilliams #ballotbattle #AntiSuffrage

.@mrsfdwilliams I’m glad you know how to read census data, but your first sentence here is where you go awry… “Assuming that the two races of women would qualify to vote in the same proportions.” #BallotBattle

I’m working to expand educational opportunities for women so I have no doubt plenty of white women can meet the criteria, but Virginia women don't want, or need, the franchise @LanghorneLewis #BallotBattle

@NoVoteJane1 @AdeleGClark @lilamvalentine @SuffragistP Meeting all three  requirements is not something I imagine African American women will achieve before the brave white sister suffragists who are on the front lines of this war. Are you afraid you won't meet the criteria? @lilamvalentine #ballotbattle

The literacy test isn't sufficient to cut off African American women voting. They are quickly increasing their literacy rates. @AdeleGClark @lilamvalentine @LanghorneLewis @SuffragistP #ballotbattle #AntiSuffrage

@HenryLValentine The Antis assumption “that only the women of the negro race would be sufficiently interested in citizenship to register and vote” is an “insult to the white women of the South.” #BallotBattle

@HenryLValentine Once we open the doors to women voting, anything can happen.

The battle is on! Starting at 11am, follow the hashtag #BallotBattle to watch as figures from Virginia's past debate the difficult issues of race and suffrage. We'll be joined by the @VirginiaMuseum, the @LibraryofVA and the @LburgMuse. #RichmondStories

What has suffrage agitation done for Virginia women? @lilamvalentine @SuffragistP @OraStokes16 @LanghorneLewis It only unsettles the thoughts of women! Right, @MrsFDWilliams @HenryLValentine? #ballotbattle #AntiSuffrage

As Woman’s Club president, I worked widen the basis of education of women and extend the fields in which they may be employed. @SuffragistP @LilaMValentine @LanghorneLewis I don’t need the ballot to do that. #ballotbattle #AntiSuffragist

Virginia women want an annex to UVA for the higher education of women, but the Assembly keeps voting it down because women have no power at the ballot box @LilaMValentine @OraStokes16 @LanghorneLewis @NoVoteJane1 @MrsFDWilliams #ballotbattle

The right of the ballot is not inherent. @LilaMValentine "The Framers of the Constitution gave the ballot to men because they had the strength to enforce the laws they made." #ballotbattle #AntiSuffrage

.@mrsfdwilliams @henrylvalentine I hear you have women officeholders speaking for the #AntiSuffrage cause. Again, CONGRATS on supporting women participating in government – glad to know you’re on our side ;) @NoVoteJane1 #BallotBattle

"As long as it is necessary for women to be 'Bread-winners,' let. . .every avenue be open to them which will lead to their ultimate success." But women don't need the vote to make that happen! #ballotbattle #AntiSuffrage

Agree with @mrsfdwilliams. The Va Assn Opposed to Woman Suffrage believes women are less likely to elevate the men in politics and more likely to degrade themselves. #ballotbattle #AntiSuffrage

The market is perfect - it's within the woman's sphere! But that's a far cry from the polling location, overrun with drunken and dangerous men. #BallotBattle #AntiSuffrage

“If you hold your marriage, your family life, your home, your religion, as sacred, clear and inviolate, to be preserved for yourself, and for your children, for all time, then work with all your might against Socialism's vanguard–Woman's Suffrage.” #ballotbattle #AntiSuffrage

@HenryLValentine @LilaMValentine I agree! #BallotBattle

As president of the Woman's Club my aim has been "to reach upward, and still upward, for there is no limit to knowledge."
