Derrick didn't hesitate. He swam out to a stranger's child and pushed her toward the other rescuers. He got her out. The same current that let her go took him instead. His body washed ashore the next day. He was 47. He left behind four children of his own. Think about that. A man who spent his whole life keeping other people's kids safe in a classroom died keeping one more safe in the water - a girl he'd known for less than a minute. Summer got to say seven words to his family: "Thank you, I really owe my life to you." And his mother, who buried her son, said this: "My son is the type of person that would do it again. Even though we lost my son, I'm not mad at anybody." That's who Derrick Moore was. Not a headline. Not a hashtag. A man who saw a child drowning and decided his own life was the acceptable price. Bonnie Pierce got out of her burning St. Paul home. Then she ran back in for her toddler. Firefighters found her shielding her daughter with her own body. She had already made it outside. She went back anyway. That is not luck. That is a mother deciding her child’s life was worth more than her own. She died Monday from her injuries. The little girl she covered is expected to recover. Bonnie was 38. She was a mother of four. She used her last minutes as a shield. A lot of people talk about love. Very few would walk back into a fire to prove it. We just watched people stand outside a courthouse for a woman accused of killing her own three children. That circus got attention. Bonnie Pierce gave her life and barely got a fraction of it. Honor does not belong to the spectacle. It belongs to the woman who ran toward the fire. Remember her name. Pray for her children. This is what love looks like when it costs everything.

When Detectives Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were killed, and Bill de Blasio invited himself to their funerals, I was proud to be one of the cops there who turned our backs on him. It’s the most epic of silent protests I can imagine. I’d do it again. For someone who campaigned with and embraced people who have said America deserved 9/11, for someone who shows more empathy towards criminals than cops and law-abiding citizens, for someone whose wife knowingly and openly supports terrorism, and for someone whose wife knowingly doesn’t respect us or our way of life, I simply want to remind the 9/11 families that you have the option and right to turn your back on Zohran Mamdani. Since he believes in protest so much, go ahead and make him the subject of one.
