@Notorious_RSG My advisor wrote one of the foundational books in our subfield. Should he not assign it?
@Notorious_RSG I have had professors do that, and it felt very awkward.
@Notorious_RSG It depends. Sometimes there is no other book covering what you want to cover. Sometimes professors write books because there is a gap in the literature that they need for a class. Sometimes students take classes because they like the professors' writing and want to read more.
@Notorious_RSG I actually wish profs *had* assigned their own work. Their academic reputation is often one of the reasons I take their class, and I feel that I often come out of it without having learned anything in the area they have the most expertise in.
