So Ohtani ended up w something like 10/460 in present value, a record, v. close to expected. No one would be mad at 10/460. Except he did it in a way that A) sounds cooler B) may have CA tax benefits C) makes his team more likely to keep adding D) still in LA. That's some chess.

First it was expected Ohtani would get a deal around $500-$600M. After his injury it was assumed it’d drop. Then people thought it was nuts he got $700M. Turns out the true present value is just under $500M, and will be taxed accordingly, and everyone thinks LA gamed the system.

For the ‘MLB needs a salary cap’ folks… The Angels were purchased for $183M in 2003. In 2022, the team was valued at over $2.2 billion. What makes more sense? Arte Moreno earning $2 billion over 20 years, or Shohei Ohtani making 1/3 of that over 10 years?
