Miconia doesn’t need much to grow—even a rock will do. 🌱🪨 With its shallow roots, this invasive tree can’t hold soil in place. When it replaces deep-rooted native plants, it leaves our watersheds vulnerable to erosion, landslides, and muddy runoff into streams and reefs.

Every time we hike, we clean our boots! Scrubbing to remove mud and debris off your boots helps prevent the spread of unwanted seeds and pests to new areas, and finishing with a spray of 70% isopropyl alcohol helps kill the Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death fungus.

From the forest floor to the canopy, every layer of the forest plays a role in protecting our watershed. The roots hold soil in place, plants filter rainwater, and the canopy helps capture moisture from passing clouds. Healthy forests mean clean water—for all of us! 🌿💧

It’s not every day you see ʻōhiʻa growing in urban Oʻahu – especially one this color! 🌆🌿This beautiful tree was spotted at Waiahole Elementary. When we spot ʻōhiʻa in urban areas, it’s a powerful reminder of our connection to the native ecosystems that keep Hawai‘i thriving.
