Am I just caught up in generational nostalgia, or was there undeniably something remarkable about gaming in the early 2000s?
@ObsoleteSony @Rewayah That era was standing at the threshold of an unknown but limitless future. It was never quite as exciting again after we stepped over it. It’s pretty much all diminishing returns as we continue to resolve the picture we could already see pretty clearly.
@ObsoleteSony I mean there's some nostalgia that does cloud games from the early 2000's imo. Like how in Bioshock 1, you either had plasmids equipped or your weapon equipped and you couldn't have both out. Or how in Mass Effect 1, you couldn't sprint and shoot at the same time.
Thats a tough question, upgrading from an Amstrad to a Megadrive was an incredible leap. Then the mid '90s were probably peak excitement for me, that move into 3D texture mapped graphics. Importing games from Japan nobody in the UK had heard of. In terms of 2000's obviously the launch of the PS2 in Japan was a moment, also seeing Star Wars Rogue Leader on GC at E3 2001. I guess that journey went right though the growth of online console gaming.
@ObsoleteSony no it was actually fun back then now it's either "impactful" or predatory
@ObsoleteSony it was competing with daytime television and pets.com, so clearly Star Wars Podracing was better
@ObsoleteSony I think there was something remarkable. You had console matching and beating arcade graphics, I thought that was a big deal at the time.
@ObsoleteSony @QuetzalPhoenix Your brain's tolerance for the dopamine release from gaming was much lower back then. It was more of a special occasion. It's like going to a restaurant was for many people. It's no longer a special occasion when you just do it all the time, whenever you want.
