You rarely hear stories of other nationals abroad reporting fellow nationals to immigration authorities the way we sometimes see among Nigerians. In some cases, people have even reported their own spouses. I once had a consultation with a Nigerian couple after one spouse reported the other to immigration authorities over an inadmissibility issue just because of a small misunderstanding. The reporting spouse apparently did not understand that the issue could potentially affect the entire family. In the end, the family were asked to leave the country. This is why I always advise people to understand the consequences before making such a decision. A person who is currently out of status may still have legal options, depending on their circumstances. They may be eligible for other pathways to regularize their status and continue to remain legally in the country. Reporting them without first understanding their situation can sometimes turn a problem that could have been resolved into one with much more serious consequences. If you know someone undocumented or out of status, the compassionate thing to do is to encourage them to seek qualified immigration advice. Help them find a solution instead of helping create a crisis. And if you are living abroad without legal status, do not wait until immigration authorities come looking for you. Seek professional advice early. You may have options. To Nigerians living abroad: let us do better. Not every immigration problem requires a report. Sometimes, what someone needs is information, guidance and a chance to fix their situation.
