We’re not here to change minds, but to open them.

Take a step towards connection.

Conversations across divides and differences can leave us more thoughtful, more empathetic, and sometimes even more hopeful than we expected. It matters to talk with people who think differently and have alternative stories from us.
Faith and spiritual beliefs often guide how we see the world and how we make decisions. For many, they are a source of comfort, community, and moral grounding.
The reason we continue to have these types of conversations is simple: people still want to be heard and respected. Even when it feels uncomfortable. Every story we share makes it harder to see each other as enemies and easier to remember the humanity we share.
Looking back at how we are capable of connecting helps us see a way forward—and every story shared makes it harder to see each other as enemies, and easier to remember the humanity we share.
When the world feels heavy, it’s often the small things that keep us steady, like a walk with a friend, the smell of coffee in the morning, or a good laugh and meal around the dinner table. These simple joys remind us that life is bigger than our disagreements or our differences.
For our team, the heart of this work is creating space where people can talk honestly and respectfully. That kind of space is rare online today, and makes our work so meaningful. They give people a chance to remember what it feels like to be respected, even when we don’t agree.
We often hear how surprising it feels to sit across from someone with a completely different worldview and still find common values. These are the moments that remind us we’re more alike than the headlines suggest, & that respect can still live at the center of our conversations.
Conversations have the power to shift how we see one another. When people slow down and really listen, even for a short while, it creates space for connection across our differences. Listening doesn’t solve every problem we are currently facing, but we have to start somewhere.
ICYMI: One Small Step was on the Today Show! Tony Goldwyn shared why listening across differences matters more than ever. BTS, our team shared what it takes to bring strangers together for meaningful dialogue. Watch the recap and see why these conversations are sparking hope.
We all have a moment, a headline, an event, an experience, that shifted something in us.
Maybe it inspired hope. Maybe it made you want to get involved and see your community in a new light.
What’s a historic moment in your lifetime that changed how you see America?
“I really think if we drill down to values, we would see we are much more alike than different.”
This is what One Small Step is all about. Listening without necessarily needing to agree. Showing up as human beings, not talking points.
Before his conversation, Tony wasn’t really sure what to expect. But after?
“ My conversation with Ben really, confirmed for me, my belief and, and strong instinct that people are so multifaceted and complex that the things that where we differ is a beautiful thing.”
The loudest voices often focus on what keeps us apart and divides us.
We’re here to amplify what brings us together.

We all have someone who changed the way we see the world. A teacher, a neighbor, a friend, a stranger.
If you could thank someone from your past, who would it be? And why?
Share your story in the comments. Your words might be exactly what someone needs to hear today.
Tired of the divisions in our country? We feel it too, and so do nine out of ten Americans.
That’s why One Small Step exists. To bring people together for real conversations, not more debates. To remind us of our shared humanity.

Earlier on the @TODAYshow with @tonygoldwyn, @JennaBushHager & @octaviaspencer shared something that feels rare on national television: hope.
They discussed Tony’s experience with One Small Step, a project from @StoryCorps that brings people with different political beliefs.
What happens when a progressive LGBTQ+ journalist & a Christian leadership coach sit down to talk, not debate?
V Spehar @underthedesknews & Brenda Harkins @brendaharkins took One Small Step, showing us what it means to listen and ask brave questions without easy answers.
“We need to start seeing each other again.”

Ben didn’t come to change Tony’s mind. And Tony didn’t show up to prove a point.
They came to connect, as people first.
