Every great villain has an origin story. So does your worst habit. The costume changes. Delete the game, it becomes scrolling. Fix that, it becomes shopping. It was never the game. It was the flinch. Name the flinch, not the costume.
Write the villain's plan for your week in four lines. Then do the opposite of each. That's a better plan than most you'll write.
Munger's inversion, villain edition: Don't ask "how do I get fit?" Ask "how would the villain keep me unfit?" 1. Snacks at eye level 2. "Start Monday" 3. Gym 30 min away 4. Miss once, call the streak dead Now do the opposite. That's the plan.
The villain never asks you to quit. He asks you to start tomorrow. Then he asks again tomorrow.
@readswithravi My fear of failure never looked like fear. It looked like waiting for the right app, the right desk, two clean hours. Lost years of ideas that way. The villain doesn't scare you off. He makes you wait to do it properly.
@AlexAndBooks_ The catch: kids can't tell whether you're reading or scrolling on a phone. If you want readers, let them see you with an actual book.
@SahilBloom Keeping score is the villain's favourite relationship trick. "I did the last three, so tonight I've earned the screentime." It feels like fairness. It works like distance.
@readswithravi The learning is the easy part. Defending the free time from the scroll is the hard part. Audiobooks in the car were the only thing that finally worked for me (for now)
Every self-improvement page talks to the hero. This one studies the villain. Meet Oreh: "hero", spelled backwards. He doesn't need you to quit. He just needs you to start tomorrow.
