Daily we take photos of a 'wonder' & share before sunset. Inevitably, we view these orthographically. Adapt this for students to share observations & the word’s story. In doing so discover the orthography of words is always more than surface accuracy. caughtinthespellofwords.wordpress.com/2020/04/21/tom…
Interesting to see how language reflects moments in time and particularly interesting to compare the usage across the months. It’s all there condensed in those keywords.

Read Online Etymology Dictionary to follow the journey of the words in a 'time of corona' into English. Consider what was happening when each word was attested. Words reflect a time, place and culture.Share the story of these words with students: etymonline.com/columns/post/l…

#orthographicinquiry sparks thinking. Inquire, quest, inquisitive, query all derive from L. quaerere: to seek to learn, strive mentally. Synonyms past & present also reflect the intellectual act of inquiry:investigate, underseek, insee, sleuth. Inquiry is active, never passive.
Ignoring the interrelationship of morphology, etymology & phonology stultifies teaching spelling.Stultify, stultiloquence and constult are morphological relatives derived from L. stultus, foolish. Stolid is a distant relative. #orthographicinquiry never stolid, always intriguing.

Blustery days in Melbourne. Bluster of late 14c, to blunder, go astray. Applied to people it’s to shout angrily, noisy self-assertion, swaggering talk. Perhaps etymologically related to OE blow and distantly to windy air-filled words blather, flatulent, inflation.#orthography

"You might say I'm sitting on top of the world with a rainbow round my shoulder." "A most satisfactory state of affairs, sir."
Understanding the structure of a word - what the denotation of the base is - the senses brought to it by affixes - that is what makes the word memorable and meaningful. Highlighting vocab in 7-8th grade science.
Musing of the day: 'exorbitant' is one of those words that wear their hearts on their sleeves (secretaries kept secrets; to breakfast is to break your overnight fast, a cupboard was a board/table for cups). It's from the Latin for 'out of orbit', so off course/unreasonable.
I love my job.
Incredible explanation Thankyou @susie_dent
‘I love getting the magazine each quarter. I’m never sure whether to rush through it in one sitting – can I stop? – or savour it in snippets over the whole quarter!’ | G. S. #FoxedReaders foxedquarterly.com/products/subsc…
Editing is like rearranging furniture in a room to make the space more functional or vibrant. I may add some small accent pieces or take out some clutter if needed, but I'm not going to throw out everything and replace it with furniture that suits my tastes. It's not my house.
OED Word of the Day: dulciloquent, adj. Of a person: sweet-spoken. Hence also of an utterance, style, etc.: characterized by pleasing or mellifluous language. oed.com/view/Entry/583…
Musing of the day: screamer, note of admiration, shriek-mark, gasper, wonderer, pling, bang, shout-pole, and slammer - all terms used at some point in our history for the exclamation mark.
Finished....@LondonMudlark when is the next one out?? I need to know more😁
⭐️⭐️Explicit Teaching-Gradual Release of Responsibility Model ⭐️⭐️ Too often we see teachers model and deconstruct and move children straight to independent practice.
My word for today is <freedom> as after 5 yrs of wrongful imprisonment my former TA Ferdi, a quiet, gentle, wonderful human being, has been released. Even in times of darkness the sun can shine. Actually consider #wordinquiry into <-dom> -boredom, seldom, stardom, random, condom.
Tomie dePaola was without a doubt the best visiting author I have ever been involved in bringing to a school (yrs ago @jis Indo) Generous, funny & engaging. We even had a Strega Nona spaghetti lunch in the cafeteria while he drew pictures & shared them.😢 washingtonpost.com/local/obituari…

What else to do on a Saturday night than teach your mum orthography? Oh, and yes, that is butchers paper from fish and chips 😂
With working from home, it seems we fall into 2 categories: those who forget to eat & so have brinner only for the day (esp if they eat cereal or eggs when they do finally eat) or those of us (me) who look in the fridge every time we need a mental break. #orthographicinquiry
