Maybe this is everything wrong with Carrick at Man U. This is modern football, you must press, you must run, it’s that simple. This mentality is also reflecting on Man U this season, how easy they bypass them, how easy they lose second balls. The problem is not just about running, it’s about what your running achieves. Pressing is not just chasing the ball, it’s about closing passing lanes, forcing your opponent into mistakes and winning the ball back in dangerous areas. But for that to work, the entire team must move together. The forwards press, the midfield squeezes the space behind them, and the defensive line pushes up to eliminate the gaps. If one unit doesn’t do its job, the entire press falls apart. That is exactly what we have been seeing with United. Opta stat shows that United’s opponents are allowed an average of 12.1 passes before a defensive action, while United have recorded only 26 high turnovers, the 15th most in the league. Their forwards have also been particularly poor at tracking opponents without the ball. Do you see one of the problem of this team??? Look at that Como again. Man U press lacked coordination, leaving spaces between the midfield and defence that Como repeatedly used. Technically good teams will continue to punish this team unless a lot of things change and it start with them running and pressing. Nobody is saying pressing is the only way to win a football match. Different teams have different approaches. You can defend in a mid block, sit deep and attack on the counter. But whatever approach you choose requires intensity, concentration and collective discipline. How is he not seeing it that Man U intensity is gone? The point is not that United must press every team for 90 minutes. The point is that their intensity and coordination is off. Even a low block requires running, shifting across the pitch, tracking runners and competing for second balls. They’re struggling with all that.

🚨 Michael Carrick: “You should be careful with just saying we are ‘not running’”. “We’ve won a lot of games over a period of time and this pressing thing, that suddenly everyone thinks about pressing. Pressing is one small part of football. There's all sorts of different ways
