#OTD 1921, Stanislaw Lem, a literary classic, philosopher, futurologist and essayist, and one of the most respected 🇵🇱writers, was born in Lviv (pre-war Poland). His Return from the Stars, Solaris and Cyberiad have entered the canon of the most famous Sci-Fi works of the 20th c.
Today, we commemorate the 342st anniversary of the Battle of Vienna. The Polish King Jan III Sobieski won a magnificent victory over the Ottoman Turks. This was one of the most important battles in the history of the world. This battle saved Europe and Christianity.

On 11 September 1932, Polish aviators Stanisław Wigura and Franciszek Żwirko fatally crashed in a plane accident. They won the international air contest Challenge 1932 on a Polish RWD-6 aircraft, which was the first major international success for Polish sport aviation.

#OTD in 1944 Friar Michał Czartoryski was executed by the Germans. He did not want to leave the wounded in one of the field hospitals. Born an aristocrat, he chose the path of service as a Dominican Friar. His remains have never been found.
On 5 September 1915, the Polish painter and art theoretician Stanisław Witkiewicz died. He was known for inventing the “Zakopane Style” of architecture (also known as the “Witkiewicz Style”), in which he designed homes and interiors for well-off and artistically inclined Poles.

#OTD in 1942 German authorities in Warsaw issued an announcement reminding Poles that the penalty for aiding Jews who fled the ghettos was death.
The MS Piłsudski, a luxury Polish passenger ship during the interwar period, was widely considered a symbol of the newly independent Poland’s access to the sea. That is, until it sunk mysteriously in 1939, earning the nickname “the Polish Titanic.”
The General Trust Office East was a German institution that was in charge of confiscating the property of citizens of Poland and ultimately selling it for nothing to Germans. It seized approx. 200 thousand businesses, all banks and more than 290 thousand parcels of land.
Germans have come to believe the narrative that they were victims of the Nazis - according to a study by the Bielefeld Institute, as many as 37% 🇩🇪 say so. In contrast, almost 70% believe their ancestors were not perpetrators.
