#MarchforOurLives began after a school shooting in Parkland Florida. Four days later students in Parkland organised the March and a month later, a national walk out was organised online, resulting in a million students walking out for 17 minutes, a minute for each life lost.

Online activism is sometimes referred to as ‘Slacktivism’, in a critique of its hypocrisy. Meaning that the causes people advocate for online never reach the real world, and those speaking about issues online do not advocate for the cause in their lives outside of social media.

Benefits of Online Activism: Social medias are an effective platform for activism because of their ability to document individual experiences, build solidarity in communities, widely share information and develop shared opinions and experiences.

In the last 8 weeks Iran’s regime has killed over 300 protestors, imprisoned nearly 15,000, and threatened to execute hundreds more, yet Iran’s women persist. Today female university students removed their forced hejab and chant, “I am a free woman.”
