66 of the 532 Crown Court courtrooms across England and Wales are sitting empty today. That’s 12 per cent. It is obvious that jury trials are not the cause of the record Crown Court backlog. The problem is that the courts simply do not sit. The Starmer Government introduced proposals that would significantly curb our ancient right to trial by jury. FSU research has shown that those charged with speech-related offences are almost twice as likely to be found not guilty in a Crown Court with a jury than in a magistrates’ court without one. In the last five years alone, 62,199 people were arrested for speech offences, and 12,000 were convicted. Put simply, if Lammy’s plans get onto the statute book, more people will be banged up for exercising their right to free speech. Andy Burnham must axe Lammy’s authoritarian policy.

@ArchRose90 A telling contrast. The establishment can draft emergency laws overnight to safeguard the Westminster duopoly, yet pleads total bureaucratic impotence when it comes to defending the nation's borders. The establishment protects itself, never the public.

@Danjsalt Labour's denial is structural. They belong to a managerial elite totally insulated from the consequences of their own policies. You cannot rebuild the social fabric when you view the valid concerns of the working class as a psychological defect.

@GreatBritishTT @WilliamClouston A very astute appointment. William Clouston spent years doing the hard, unglamorous work of building the SDP into a serious electoral force. The party owes him a great deal, and the GBTT has gained a serious asset.

The political landscape feels noticeably quieter. We lost Patrick O'Flynn last year, and now Rod Liddle. They were two of the few who understood that true communitarianism isn't polite, but a desperate defence of ordinary people against an indifferent establishment. We are poorer without their pens. The SDP must carry that torch. A party without it's cultural defenders must become its own best advocate. #SDP #Liddle

After a long, stable period under the leadership of William Clouston the party witnessed great success with its growth in membership and saw the revival of a party that many thought was long lost. The party now sits at a critical juncture with Wiliam's departure – we need a leader who can continue to grow the party and isn’t afraid to make the changes necessary to do it. Throughout my time working in the SDP, I have met many fellow social democrats and have come to the conclusion that you and I are in the SDP for the same reason – Britain is being failed by our establishment parties and the result is a country that is (among many other things) facing hardship from extortionate energy prices, failing industry and mass migration. The SDP needs a leader who recognises that the SDP succeeding is paramount for Britain’s future. We need a leader who is not afraid to make the changes needed to see this party excel – I’m ready to be the one to do that.
