The Compiler Explorer Story @mattgodbolt recounts the origin story of @CompileExplore, which started as a tmux session with an editor in one pane and running the compiler in a loop in the other. It has grown into a publicly available site, serving over 3M compilations per week.
A big appeal of the Turbo C period was that the internet was barely a thing. There was very little distraction and it was easy to get 'into the zone'. How do you deal with all the distractions? Impossible to work without the internet these days.
There are a lot of advantages to JIT compared to AOT. But with AOT it is so much easier to see the generated assembly without the hassle of setting up a benchmark.
Respect for @dendibakh for doing the reviewing and editing for his performance book. Writing/reviewing is so time-consuming. Try to combine that with a job, family, and social life.

@eatonphil If you want to build intuition, think about how you are mapping hardware resources (CPU and memory) to your application logic and state. With single-threaded approach, you map a fraction of the CPU and memory with a kernel thread to your application logic and state because the…

Web search is dead. Searching for "how to force restart ps5", Google only points me to YouTube videos, even under the "People also ask" section. #ChatGPT gives me the answer right away. Next step is for OpenAI to show ads.

@PeterVeentjer In those days without the Internet, Turbo C's ability to show pop-up docs was much more valuable than today. My friend had an Amiga and he scoffed on everything PC, but that one feature made him envious.
@lemire Not off the top of my head, no. But I can promise you this: if I ever decide to write a rebuttal article, I'll be sure to include multiple examples complete w/assembly & PMU breakdowns instead of just wall-clock timing😊
Happy birthday to my Partner-in-Perf, @dendibakh!🥳🥳🥳
@eatonphil A GPU comes with generic data parallel-circuits (warps) behind a cache hierarchy. Your goal is to give the GPU as many right-sized blocks of data as possible so that the dynamic schedulers can keep as many of these circuits active.
@ijuma Full credit to @forked_franz here, who pressured me to fix this thing.
The type pollution issue affecting OpenJDK has been fixed: "The time taken for a positive lookup is somewhere between 3 - 6 cycles, or about 0.9 - 1.8 ns. Negative lookups are slightly faster at about 3 - 5 cycles." (1/2)
- Whole system (including kernel) profiling, < 1% CPU overhead - x86-64 and ARM64 - No service restarts or recompilation - C/C++, Rust, Zig, Go, PHP, Python, Ruby, Node, v8, Perl, Hotspot JVM (Java etc) - Works with containerisation (just install on host)
We’re thrilled to announce that the Elastic Universal Profiling agent, a pioneering eBPF-based continuous profiling agent, is now open source under the Apache 2 license! Learn more: go.es.io/3Ul3lw9 #OTel #OpenTelemetry #APM

Was talking to a good friend who thought they have golden handcuffs ⛓ Turned out they are made of paper 😑 I cannot stress enough how verbal the modern “corporate slavery” is 🤯 Help your friends see a bigger picture, how talented they are and the opportunities they have 🙏
Preach it, brotha! PREACH!!!👏👏👏
Never trust a benchmark run by someone who doesn't use active benchmarking. If you have an unknown bottleneck, your results will be completely unreliable.
@PeterVeentjer @dendibakh I honestly don't know how he does it. I had a rough time just keeping up with writing my own sections, and I'm a bachelor who runs a business & an active social/dating life🤷🏾♂️ But a wife & kids??? He's a dynamo!
@PeterVeentjer Thank you Peter for your contribution!
@PeterVeentjer @mariofusco I did a bachelor thesis on benchmarking and that most people even omitted something as simple as the standard deviation for their benchmark results in scientific papers (reviewed over 100 papers from 4 chairs at @KITKarlsruhe)
@PeterVeentjer If the ingredients and method of making the cake are not specified it might turn out to be soup
