Preventive screening tests are the first step to successful treatment and/or management of many chronic diseases; however, national data finds that African American men tend to engage in fewer health- promoting practices and behaviors and have a higher rate of morbidity.
Depression is often underacknowledged in African American/Black communities, possibly contributing to the persistence of this mental health issue.
African American/Black women face disparities in breast cancer, being more likely to be diagnosed under 45, less likely to survive, and facing challenges such as limited access to high-quality healthcare and delayed screenings.
African American/Black men have the world's highest prostate cancer rate & face higher mortality. Factors such as lower screening rates, limited access to quality treatment, and more aggressive cancer contribute to these disparities. Awareness and regular screenings are essential
Unfortunately, a substantial number of African Americans/Black individuals experiencing depression do not seek professional help when needed, underscoring the importance of raising awareness and encouraging support.
Several risk factors contribute to heart disease, including high blood pressure, tobacco smoke, high cholesterol, physical inactivity, obesity, and diabetes. Addressing these factors is vital for maintaining heart health.
Diabetes is prevalent among African Americans/Black individuals, with recent studies attributing the high rates to biological risk factors such as weight, abdominal fat, and hereditary factors.

Positive lifestyle changes, including weight loss, a fiber-rich diet, and regular exercise, can mitigate known risk factors for diabetes. These adjustments not only reduce the likelihood of developing diabetes but also lower the associated risks of heart disease and stroke.

African American communities suffer from many social and environmental determinants that put their residents at higher risk of coronary artery disease, blood vessel disease, high blood pressure, sudden cardiac arrest, and other heart-related medical conditions.
When you cook, you have more control over the ingredients in your food and the amount you eat and serve. Plan to cook at home more often than eating out.

According to Mayo, regular physical activity can lower high blood pressure by about 5 to 8mm Hg. It's important to keep exercising to keep blood pressure from rising again. As a general goal, aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day.
