Hopefully it has been worth the wait. A new Sed Contra podcast is dropping this afternoon; fittingly on this day in which we commemorate the day of St. Thomas' death 750 years ago (1274). Topic: the Quest for the Historical St. Thomas Aquinas
The newest Sed Contra podcast episode is now available: The Quest for the Historical St. Thomas Aquinas with Fr. Cajetan Cuddy OP, Dr. Matthew Minerd, and Dr. James W. Stroud. …t-of-catholic-theology.simplecast.com/episodes/quest…
"Wherever created grace is fully Christian, the uncreated grace of the divine indwelling is perfect. Conversely, where the indwelling of divine Persons is perfect, grace is fully Christian. These two graces—one created and the other uncreated—are simultaneous and inseparable.…
"Theology, in all its various parts and treatises, is one single science... This property of theology follows from the specific and indivisible unity of its formal object, the concept of Deity, which is constantly and equally considered in all the parts and treatises of this…
"But—and here is a wonderful revelation that fills us with joy—this fullness of Divine life which is in Jesus Christ is meant to overflow from Him to us, to the whole of humankind. The Divine Sonship, which is in Christ by nature and makes Him God’s own and only Son, the…
"In His mysteries, Christ makes but one with us..." - Dom Columba Marmion, O.S.B.
"This same Apostle Paul does not cease to repeat to us under one hundred different forms that our sanctification is of the supernatural order, that it is God alone who has created this order and established the means for realizing it in us, and that our sanctification amounts to…
"... Never let us weary of returning to these themes (from the life of Christ) in our prayer: each action, each state in Christ’s life is not only a teaching, but in the wide sense of the word, is a ‘sacrament.’" - Dom Columba Marmion, O.S.B.
"Yet, it is the most open, most generous and most inhabited solitude. Because of it, another society is formed -- the society of the multitude of blessed souls, each of which on its own account beholds the divine essence and enjoys the same uncreated Good. They love mutually…
"Were there but a single soul to enjoy God thus, it would still be blessed, even though it would not have to share this beatitude with any other creature.{12} Ordained to Him who is the Good by His essence and the Good by essence, it has, as the object of its vision and the…
"In the second place concerning the possession itself of the ultimate end, St. Thomas teaches that in the beatific vision each blessed soul, knowing God as He is and as it itself is known by Him,grasps the Divine Essence and becomes God intentionally in the most immediate act…
"Let us note further that, though God is the "separated common good" of the universe, the intellectual creature is related, primarily as to the object of its beatitude, not to God as the common good of the universe of nature and creation, but to God in the transcendence of his…
"How can a legal positivist be faithful to the intention of the Framers if he does not believe in the existence of the moral order that the Framers believed the Constitution was designed to implement? Where can such a judge turn to deny that a right claimed under the Ninth…
"For Karl Barth, the political order has above all a negative relevance for the order of redemption, and this merely consists in the fact that the state does not restrict the freedom to preach the Gospel. In our opinion, this overly simplistic view fails to grasp the dynamism of…
"The clergy must exist with the people and experience their suffering as though it were their own, so that they might directly communicate to them, not the goods of culture and civilization, but those of the kingdom of God. Their task is to wrest each individual soul from mortal…
"The Christian knows that, even down to the most remote depths of his being, he is formed by the Church and that he is formed by her immeasurably more than he forms her. He knows that Christians in a given age are all shaped by the momentum of the Church of all ages, even more…
"Owing to the christic holiness of each one of her children, the whole Church is a kingdom of light and love, the kingdom of the Son of Man, a kingdom not of this world but already in this world." - Charles Journet, L'Église du verbe incarné
The Trinity not only sheds its light on each of the Christian mysteries. It constitutes them. Indeed, it constitutes the very fabric of the economy of salvation. The whole of Christianity comes down to this fundamental intuition: the communication of the Trinitarian life, through…

Matthew Minerd and Jon Kirwan did a great good making these readily available in “The Thomistic Response to the Nouvelle Théologie”
Good advice, but (lest the hagiography lead us to forget) Dennett himself did not actually follow it when arguing w/ dualists, theists & other non-naturalists. Nor, really, even when dealing with fellow naturalists whose assumptions were very different from his own (e.g. Searle)
@PhilCatholic Thank you and likewise. I've shared it with a good friend who is a parent, and while I'm not a parent myself, the parallel that you draw here was really helpful for some things I'm dealing with.
@PhilCatholic Just wanted to say how very much I appreciated your piece in this month's "Magnificat". (I would say so in a Direct Message but these days it may well get blocked.)
Today I turn 39. My 30s were my favorite decade of life. Not in a hurry for them to end.
The psalms
What poem would you read on your last morning on Earth?
Christ before me Christ behind me Christ beneath me Christ above me Christ on my right Christ on my left Christ when I lie down Christ when I sit down Christ when I arise Christ within me.
Tenure's nice for old academics, but the process of getting it selects against the bold truth-telling that is its ostensible rationale. It should be abolished, and if we must pay academics more to compensate for the loss of a valuable fringe benefit, that would be a good trade.
Popular support for tenure will continue to erode primarily because, barring federal judges and people in strong unions, no one else has secure employment. So to most people the whole arrangement seems strange.
@BruvverEccles You missed the joke. He is saying that the fan is a bigger fan of Saint Thomas than him …. because it is a massive fan. I know him and he is a fan of Saint Thomas.
"Like the sun, he heated the world with the warmth of his virtues and filled it with the splendor of his teaching." Happy feast (in the old calendar) of the Magister, the Common Doctor, St. Thomas Aquinas.
A reminder for those prone to mouthing stupid clichés to the effect that sexual vice is “no big deal,” “doesn’t hurt anybody,” “is nobody else’s business,” etc. Excerpted from my Nova et Vetera article “The Politics of Chastity”: stpaulcenter.com/07-nv-19-4-fes…
@PhilCatholic Thanks, Dr. Minerd. Yes, everything from Humanae Vitae to indulgences, to a charitable conversation involves a gift of self, imaging the Trinity and participating in divine nature (2 Pt 1:4).
Thanks everybody. Some days you eat the bear, but some days...
Before and after.
Among the Doctors, only St. Augustine does this kind of stuff. He was also the only one who was a dad. Go figure.
Not since Otto Von Bismarck tweeted his ridiculous response to the “Who Shot Jr?” reveal on Sanford & Son, have so many people been wrong in the replies.
@RonDeSantis Rod, Winston Churchill was a great American, but it is inappropriate to invoke his words when quitting. Also, Trump is not eligible to serve two terms unless they are consecutive, so it makes no sense to endorse him
Either he believes this demagogic horseshit or he’s making it up. Either way it’s shameful.

Under Obama, Rand Paul did 12+ hour filibuster to warn of the threat of presidents using drones on Americans. But he can’t offer an opinion on whether presidents have blanket immunity to do all the crimes? Because the specifics are just so hard to grasp? Ffs 🤦♂️
