The second reading of the controversial Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill begins in the House of Commons today, from around 3:30pm. There are concerns that the Bill, if passed, will heavily restrict the freedoms of people in the UK.
The leader of the opposition slammed the budget, calling it “nowhere near ambitious enough.“ He also condemned the government’s £2bn council tax rise.
Keir Starmer: “I didn’t expect the chancellor to lift a failed policy from eight years ago.” - in reference to the Chancellor’s attempt to create ‘generation buy’.
BREAKING: The Chancellor has announced a Tax Super-Deduction, “the biggest business tax cut in modern British History.” For the next 2 years, when companies invest, they can reduce their tax bill by 130% of the cost of investment.
NEW: The Chancellor has announced that Income tax, National insurance and VAT will NOT be raised, but personal tax thresholds will be frozen.
Furlough extended until the end of September, with no change of terms for employees. Businesses, when reopened, will be asked for a 10% contribution, rising to 20-30% in September.
The U.K. economy is expected to return to pre-COVID levels by mid 2022, 6 months earlier than expected, according to the OBR.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock defends himself today, after the High court found he acted unlawfully by not publishing details of COVID contracts: ‘Are you saying that if you know a minister, you shouldn’t be allowed to have contracts?’ (Via Sky News)
A key SAGE document on easing restrictions suggests that hospital occupancy will EXCEED levels seen last month if all COVID measures are lifted by May.
NEW: Rules on international travel will be reviewed. The PM gave 17th May as the earliest date for foreign holidays to be permitted.
Outdoor meetings of two households will be permitted from 29th March. There will also be no legal ‘stay at home’ requirement from this date.
BREAKING: From 8th March, all schools in England will reopen to all pupils, and outdoor meetings with one other person will be allowed. The rule of six will be back for outdoor socialising from the 29th March, with organised sports restarting on the same date. (Via Sky News)
